And why do you want one? Looks inferior to me.

The same reason that some guys are desperately looking for those pullover, short sleeved smocks. They want to be like their MLB heroes.

That mask has almost the exact same look as the lightweight mask made by schutt. you might want to check that out instead of trying to hunt down the mizuno one.

I wouldn't agree with that.

Unlike the Mizuno. the Schutt has a built-in throat protector:

That's why it has ALMOST the exact same look

You gotta be sh!tting me. You can look at those two masks and make that statement?

That's like saying a Ford Focus has almost the exact same look as a Lexus.

On that basis every mask has ALMOST the exact same look.

kylejt Fri Oct 19, 2007 01:02am

I have a Schutt mask, and it's nothing like the Mizuno.

The Schutt is terrifically light, but lightly padded. I've taken a couple off the chin that I've felt, so I'm going to switch to WV padding for the frame.

Other than the throat protector, they both have almost nothing for ear gaurds and both have an extended bar at the top for the harness, producing a similiar look. The honigs and wilson masks I've used look nothing like it. I know nothing about the quality of either of them, but if this guy liked this mask because of the way it looked (as long as the throat gaurd wasn't a dealbreaker), the schutt is closer than any other mask I've seen. Surely you can agree with that.

I still don't. (not a big deal though)

And don't call me Surely.

Obviously designed for those who like the hideous styling of a helmet, but don't want to wear a helmet.

kylejt Sun Oct 21, 2007 04:17pm

As unconventional, or goofy if you will, it looks, it might be a better mousetrap. The newer, flatter masks will transfer more shock to your dome. Something more hatchet shaped will defect more balls, rather than absorb them. I'd like to see a side view of it.

I love my new Schutt mask because it's so freaking light. BUT, like my old SUL, I don't really trust it. I'm going to swap out the padding for a little more safety.

Hats off to All Star for giving us another choice. With +POS possibly down for the count we need them.

You must not have read the copy. This IS a flatter mask. Whoever is in charge of R&D should be canned.

Wow. It's called the "I-Bar." It's so ugly it should be called "E-Gads."

This mask certainly does not fill me with confidence, for sure. Maybe for slo-pitch softball. It's so hideous that it probably repels the ball rather than deflects it.

kylejt Wed Oct 31, 2007 12:09pm

While I agree about it not looking so great, there are some things I like about the design.

More throat/neck coverage.

No flat spots, and lots of angles. You are less prone to get a square shot with this mask.

The ear protection is bent backwards. Again, a shot there won't spin your mask off, unlike the masks we all wear.

The lower pad looks like it will distribute the energy better, and over a larger area.

Think of it as the Volvo of umpire masks. It may not be sexy....
