Beckon or Point (to commence play)??

I was just curious I've seen umpires either:

Point to the pitcher to commence play

or

Beckon to the pitcher.

Which mechanic do you use and are there league/association specific rules regarding either/or??

505 ump Thu Sep 27, 2007 05:05pm

point

A crisp point and a clear "PLAY"

bobbybanaduck Thu Sep 27, 2007 06:07pm

are there actually people out there that TEACH people to "beckon" to start play????

SanDiegoSteve Thu Sep 27, 2007 06:25pm

Beckoning looks wussy. Whatever FED genius came up with that monstrosity of a signal should be castrated.

Bassman Thu Sep 27, 2007 06:26pm

Tell that to MLB #36. He still beckons ;)

Agreed! ASA also requires the same mechanic.

when you're as good as mcclelland you go ahead and do whatever you damn well please.

RPatrino Thu Sep 27, 2007 07:18pm

So, whats the 'point'?

ozzy6900 Thu Sep 27, 2007 07:25pm

The old FED mechanic was to beckon. Finally in 2007, the FED came up to speed. Personally, I never beckoned in over 25 years - I always point.

That's the point to it all!

JRutledge Thu Sep 27, 2007 07:40pm

I have always pointed.

Peace

briancurtin Thu Sep 27, 2007 07:41pm

always point

Beckon. No matter how long P sees it, they never abuse by mount and throw

a Little OT
I was doing a Little League FP game and F1 whipped a pitch before I pointed. I immediately called NO PITCH and then informed her to wait until I gave her the finger to start an inning. The parents were rolling.:D

McClelland does several bizarre things besides beckoning. He has always been a strange looking umpire.

just curious guys, i hold up my hand, point, and say loud enough for batter and catcher too here, say play, if the pitcher starts before i am ready, i step out, call no pitch, and explain it quickly and quitely too him. the next few times i say ''play'' a little louder until i think he has "the system" figured out.

IMO, the more important issues is this:

Do you "put the ball back in play" (whether you Beckon or point) after EVERY stoppage of play.

Example:

We have R1,

B1 Fouls off pitch after pitch etc.

Do you put the ball back into play ater each foul ball?

IMO, this is extremely important because the BU "could be left out to dry" if the PU doesn't put the ball back into play and then F1 picks off R1.

In Summary: To start the game the point is moot as to whether you "beckon F1" or point

The real issue is to make certain that the ball is put back into play whenever we have a stoppage otherwise Holy H*** can break loose.

Always point and yes after every stoppage.

Right on, Pete, stoppage is the real consideration. Not all this garbage about subjective style points and the "Be Like Each Other" mentality.

Good commo, Steve, showing that you understand the rythym of the game.
