4 months later, another ejection

I had forgotten what it was like.

HS fall baseball. 2 7-inning games with no new inning after 2:00.

First game, my plate. 4-2, over in 1:35. We start the second game 20 minutes later.

Working the bases, I ended up with about 10 calls forced on me by the worst baserunning I've ever seen. None that were more than routine, except one where R1 went back in standing on a pickoff throw and slid off the bag when a normal tag was applied. Since the tag was held there for that second or so, I called the runner out. No complaints and the player was reminded to slide back in.

So the next inning, we have R1/R3 and I'm in B. One of the weirdest things I've ever seen happened. R1 steals and F2 is throwing through for the out as the game wasn't close. F1 leaps as high as he can, catches the ball, wheels, and guns it to third and nails R3 returning by five feet.

That's when daddy-coach (the real coaches aren't alllowed anywhere near this stuff) tells me that I've gotten every call wrong today and that I'm terrible. I gave a little wave of my arm and said, "well, I guess you can leave, then." He walked over to the dugout, grabbed his sub sandwich leftover from the between games break and left. Not just the field, but left, got into his car, gone.

I think he wanted to get home to watch college football, myself.

I don't think there's any ejection more uncalled for than someone having to make an arse out of themselves and be ejected from a Fall baseball game. It's Fall ball for crying out loud.

Hey all,

I beleive Fall Ball should be for practice and instruction for everyone involved, including umpires. It seems like a great time to iron out mechanics, timing, etc...

Pre-season scrimmages is best time to iron out mechanics, timing, etc., before working serious games.

Fall ball is the time to try something new, like a new stance, mechanic, etc.

For me, it was to get back on the field before working the plate in an adult league championship yesterday. It went well, but there's no evidence that working the fall ball helped or hindered me. :)
