Getting the call right
 

In tonight's Padres/Red Sox game, third base umpire Brian Knight made two wrong calls. To his credit he conferred each time with his partners, and got the calls right.

The first was a sinking fly ball to left field which appeared at first look to be a nice shoe-top catch for Manny Ramirez, but upon replay was quite obviously a trapped ball. Brian Knight called it a catch. Bud Black came out to argue, and Knight got the umpires together and they reversed the call.

Later, Josh Bard hit a shot down the left field line which hit the foul pole dead-center against the Western Metal Supply building. Knight called it foul. Josh Bard, who was watching it the whole way, along with every Padres fan in attendance started to come unglued. Again, Knight talked it over with the crew and changed the call to a home run.

I'm certainly not in favor of asking for help on safe/out calls at the bases, but I sure was impressed that Knight went for help to get the really egregious errors corrected in these two situations.

I wouldn't say the errors were egregious. They were both tough calls. It was a credit to the crew that they got both of them right.

Yeah, the catch/no catch was a *****. I thought it was a "catch" when I saw it live. Obviously, I changed my opinion when I saw the replay. Being on the East Coast, I fell asleep before the home run/foul call. I couldn't make it to the end of the game two nights in a row. I didn't get to bed until 1:15 on Friday night...and my daughter (barely 3 years old) wakes me up every morning at 6. So, i was dragging to make it through 5 innings last night.

I had a friend at that game with good seats and he said he thought it was a catch and a foul ball. Then he came home and saw the replays and couldn't believe it. Really impressive work by that crew. Poor Brian Knight, though -- to have both of those happen to you in the same game.

Knight apparently had never done a game at Petco, because the ball would not have ricocheted to the right if it had hit the Imperial Bank sign to the left of the pole. The only way that ball could kick right was to hit the pole or on the fair-facing side wall of the building.

I was also watching live action and saw Mike Cameron miss third base when he scored from second base on a hit early in the game. I was sure glad the Red Sox didn't appeal, because he missed it by 6 inches, and most certainly would have been called out if they had.

I've not only been to PETCO Park, but I've had access to every crack and crevice of the place. I have to strongly disagree. The ball could easily bounce in that direction hitting the Imperial Bank sign in foul territory right next to the foul pole.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this isn't the first bout of controversy Knight has had on his recent call up is it? I'm sure I've seen him in the heat of things a couple times this week on the highlites..

Good on him for getting the calls right, at least in the second instant it didn't take long for an over-ruling, to be honest I didn't see the first...but let's face it, this is the bigs, they're paid to get those calls right, which is what I'm sure Terry Francona was reminding him of emphatically before he was ejected...
