Some FABulous looking umpires!

I go out to work a summer collegiate doubleheader Sunday--easy twin bill.

My partner and I are walking from the field to change and he points out the umpires working what looks like a Pony or Colt game on an adjoining field (not our umpires, nor do we know who they are).

The plate umpire is wearing a navy shirt. He has an adjustable, green Glenbard West (local high school) cap on and is wearing it backward. He clasps one hand to the other and puts his arms behind his back and does a deep knee bend to call pitches. His head is well below the catcher's head.

The base umpire is a frumpy looking guy who has a light blue shirt on--nothing like not matching your partner in a 2-man crew. He's wearing an adjustable, black mesh cap and has a black ball bag on his left side. His grey pants look like they're straight from the K-Mart 50% off aisle. When he bends, his white socks glisten in the sun.

On another field nearby, another umpire has a navy shirt on, is wearing a light grey adjustable cap, and wears it backward under his mask. Gotta love HIS white socks, too.

Some FABulous attire out there today, guys.

Meanwhile, my partner and I look FINE walking away in our black shirts and Davis pants. :D

But were your caps on backwards? And the socks, what color?

Was you BU wearing a ball bag of matching color to the PU's shirt?
Were you both wearing white or blue sneakers?

One of the Umps at me sons U14 travel DH on Sat. sat on the ground, leaning his back against the fence between every inning. Although he was dressed properly it looked so lazy. Also other crews that worked his games have worn thier hats backward. TACKY!!!

This must be a new position. Try to visualize this that I also saw...

Base umpire in the B position with runners on first and second. He's not just turned toward first. He's actually facing directly toward first base with his left foot a good step ahead of his right foot. His left foot is pointed directly toward first, planted on the ground a good full step away from his right foot. It looked like the setup of a dance move or something. Oh, and for no reason at all, he takes his cap off and sticks it in his back pocket, leaving his nearly bald head for all the world to see.

Except that this didn't happen in Lisle. It was the quiet town of Glen Ellyn.

People that do not live around here have a hard time realizing you might live in a town, but never work a single game there. ;)

Peace

I know. The only games I do in town are the Du Page Dragons of the CICL (Central Illinois Collegiate League), which, BTW, is expanding next year with the addition of a new northern area team. Cool.
