Shirts...

I am looking into getting into umpiring and went to a few local baseball games. At one game the crew had on Creme color shirts and another one I went to they had on red shirts. How many shirts/colors will I need, and how do you determine which color do you wear?? Any good deals right now for a basic starter package? Thanks a lot!

Our association wears black and polo blue for HS games and black, polo blue and creme for summer ball.

Red is usually reserved for disco queens and east side whores.

Honigs usually has good deals on starter packages, which normally come with a navy blue shirt. Most areas still wear the navy.

Yikes! My group voted for red for next season. I don't care for cream because it's the same color as the baseball after an inning. +POS has a silver that pretty snappy.

I'm working on a sponsorship from a big jersey maker for our group. We might even be working in Maroon shirts with silver and black trim. I've seen a mockup, with a black hat, and it's not bad. Of course, instead of Blue........

If you are going to work HS ball in Illinois, then you need the navy blue only (blue jacket with the red and white trim as well).

If you work summer ball then that can vary. First of all it really depends on who you work for and what are the requirements. My association (assignor and leagues I work for) allows us to wear cream, light blue (with the black collar), black and even red. Of course the nave blue is the default color, but during the summer most people want to wear the other colors. You will also find that many umpires that have experience with college ball in this state try their best not to wear the navy blue. The bottom line check with who will assign you games and buy what is recommended. If you can afford it, buy the colors I just mentioned (I would not buy the red unless it is common where you live). Baseball is the most expensive sport of all so you do not want to just throw money away at equipment you will not use.

Peace

Hehehe,

Every time I see an umpire is a red shirt I start humming "Stayin Alive."

I can't help myself.

Damn! I still have a Red Shirt as part of my ensemble but I don't think it's seen the light of day in 5 years!

Maybe I oughta see if we could work that into Saturday's night game! Hey, I think that I still have a Red Plate Coat in the closet, too!

UMP25 Thu May 31, 2007 11:31am

Is this everywhere? I just got a red and haven't gotten a chance to wear it. I don't want people to think I'm a disco queen. :p

UMP25 Thu May 31, 2007 01:31pm

"You are the Dancing Queen, young and ...".

IHSAref Thu May 31, 2007 11:30pm

got the shirt thing sorted out...now what color hat? BLue or black. The IHSA handbook doesnt say. Also what is better a combo hat or a plate hat and a base hat?? Thanks a ton!!

Since the IHSA requires a navy shirt, the navy cap would be the correct one to wear.

ozzy6900 Fri Jun 01, 2007 10:46am

Blue would be the first choice but Lavender would go nicely, also!

UMP25 Fri Jun 01, 2007 10:47am

OK, Dale Scott.

I heard something about a new jacket standard with the IHSA logo on it instead of the navy with R/W/B trim. Do you know anything about it?

Rcichon Fri Jun 01, 2007 11:46am

Red is Dead.....

Ah yes,

Dale Scott the first MLB umpire to wear a red shirt while umpiring a World Series Game.

Unforgettable.

I have no idea what you are talking about. This is probably just a rumor.

It's scheduled to go into effect right after I place my next jacket order. ;)

UMP25 Fri Jun 01, 2007 02:12pm

And if it's manufactured by +POS, it'll be on back order for no less than 6 months, then take an additional 6 months to receive, and when you do get it, it'll be the wrong one.

Right on with +pos "customer service"
I use to order only from them and have it in a few days. I ordered pants in January and will not get them until July 4th or the week around there. It's unfortunate.

Regards,

I used to work with a REALLY big guy. Every time he wore red, it reminded me of the Kool-Aid pitcher. Oh, yeah.

If the pros started wearing Lavender, there would suddenly be a run on Lavender umpire shirts by everyone here.:D

I'll bet more than one poster here has tried to purchase one of those MLB umpire smocks these guys are sporting this season.

Not everything the ML umpires wore has gained wide acceptance elsewhere.

Red shirts, maroon plate coats...to name a couple. Hopefully, the coach style shortsleeve windbreaker will be added to the list,

UMP25 Sat Jun 02, 2007 10:26am

I agree, Garth. I never did like those type of "jackets." I personally think they're ugly, but that's just me.

No, it's not just you. I think they are ugly too. They look like something a barber or stylist would wear when cutting hair.

Now if they just came in Lavender. . .:)
