Ball Out of Play
Runner on 1st. Batter hits a ground ball. Fielder makes a wild throw. 1st baseman deflects the ball. Both the runner and the batter have sucessfully reached 2nd and 1st base. Now the ball rolls and goes out of play. What bases do the runners advance? 2nd and 3rd? 3rd and home? Or do they stay put?
I am not a baseball Umpire, thus I do not have a rule book. Is this rule different for different levels? MLB, NCAA, Federation and Little League. |
This is an easy one - first play by an infielder on a batted ball. 2 bases from Time of Pitch base -- so runners are now at 2nd and 3rd.

Zoochy,
If the fielder who made the wild throw was an infielder, AND the throw was his first attempted play, AND the R1 and BR had not both reached their next base (2B & 1B, respectively) at the time the throw left said fielder's hand, the proper awards are 3B and 2B, respectively. Two bases, TOP. Otherwise, it would be Home and 3B, respectively. Two bases, TOT. JM |

Zoochy,
They certainly do. TOP=Time of Pitch: The instant the pitcher initiated his motion to deliver the pitch. TOT=Time of Throw: The instant the ball left the hand of the fielder making the throw. JM |
