Strange sound in game today
 

In this, my 4th season of umpiring, in a plate game I did today the batter hit the ball and something just did not sound right. Looked on the ground after he was put out. There lay a wooden bat. I can honestly say that I think that's the first time I have heard that sound in 3+ years of umpiring. I had to chuckle that a sound that was part of the fabric of my youth almost seemed out of place hearing it on the field today.

the ball being hit off of a wood bat is a beautiful sound...unless you're the one being sawed off. :-)

That sound really IS out of place in most games today. I would wonder why the batter would put his self in a disadvantage by using a wood bat and not metal like all (quite MOST all) others.

On the flip side............I have worked HS level tournaments that only allow wood bats and it is a different game. I always jump at the chance because it is most enjoyable to work a game that is more 'traditional'. Lots of fun.

we used to do a under 20 summer ball-wood bat league. It was cool.
