NCAA question

R2 less than two outs. Batter gets a base hit to the outfield, R2 rounds third heads for home. The throw is right there and the runner slams into the catcher. Catcher holds onto the ball and the runner is out and is also ejected for malicious contact. Batter goes to 2nd. Is the batter allowed to take 2nd or does he stay at first?

If the runner runs over the catcher and is ejected, the play is dead when that contact is called. Runner or runners remain where they were at the time of the malicious contact. In this play he'll most likely not have attained second base, so he'll stay at first.

OK, thanks. This happened at the Troy-Auburn game last night. After 30 minutes of debate the umps let the batter stay at second. I don't know if he actually made it to second at the time of the ejection, and I don't know if anyone else did either as all eyes were on the plate. It didn't affect the outcome as the next batter hit an inning-ending pop up. This was indeed a Pete Rose-Ray Fosse collision except the catcher held on to the ball and two innings later hit the game winning HR.

Thanks again.

30 minutes? The only debate could be had BR attained 2B at the time.

NCAA 8-7-a

A.R. 2—If the collision by the runner was malicious, the runner shall be declared out and also ejected from the contest. The ball shall be declared dead.
