Comfortable leg guards
 

Any suggestions for the most comfortable leg guards? I typically do big field games by myself for rec., Freshmen and JV. My legs are getting chewed up as I'm running. My current leg guards are no name, cheap, hand me downs. Thanks!

I love my Douglas leg guards. Very comfortable, and they stop everything without feeling it. Quick release straps make for easy removal too.

If your legs are getting abused while you're running you need to invest in a good pair of Underarmor or McDavid full length leg wear.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll try the leg wear first before laying out the money for new leg gurards. Although they are no names, I've been hit quite a few times and they've done the job!

Matt, I second the leg wear. I have worn McDavid ankle-length interawear for years--only because Under Armour, my preferred vendor, does not have a built-in cup pocket, whereas McDavid does--and it makes a huge difference. In addition, I use the Gerry Davis shin guards. They're the lightest guards I've ever worn, AND they're the most protective, IMHO, especially around the knee area. They're also among the most inexpensive. After using the West Vest guards and others for some time, I'd never leave my Davis ones. I criss-cross the two strap guards and I'm set.

Ditto. Criss-cross and McDavids. I use cheap Coopers because they fit me so well. Be sure the gap between your plate shoes and the bottem of the s/g is covered. My WV s/g's are in my garage as backups. I like the light, thin, CoolMax lined Coopers.

I hate my shins, I have the Honig's K17's (I think)...they do the job, but they're heavy...would like to get a new pair...but I just can't justify getting new ones...I've been spending my money on Under Armour, better socks, etc... and other things that aid in the comfort of working in extreme heat/cold...so far, it's been well worth the investment. BTW...I'd recommend wearing some type of full length compressions on the plate and bases, you'll never go back...it really does keep you either warmer or cooler, whichever you prefer.

Johnny, try the Davis guards. You'll love them. Plus, they're significantly less costly than others, so the price should be more agreeable to you.

Note: Some have reported that using the Davis guards under combo pants doesn't fit well due to the Davis guards' generous knee protection. I wouldn't know, as I don't wear combo pants.

K17's are too heavy?? I've used mine for ages, and once I went to my NB plate shoes, the K17's have lightened up considerably...

For comfort I really liked the Davis shinguards. My prob is that I had a hard time keeping them clean. I ended up having to toss them after I developed a rash on my legs.

I was recommended a pair of Pro Nine's so I picked some up. They have pro features and a reasonably comfortable. The best part is I can remove the knee cap and the shin liner and throw them in the washer.

Ice, with the Davis guards, try this:

1. If they're quite dusty after a game, keep a water spray bottle handy and simply squirt some onto the guards, especially the crevices and all.

2. Also use a little Fabreeze on them to keep them from getting all scummy. FWIW, I also use Fabreeze on my caps after every game. It keeps the sweat stains from building up and keeps the dirt from settling in. While I buy new caps every year, I have extended the life of them when using Fabreeze.

I put my chest protector, shin guards and face mask in the back seat and drive home with the back windows down, then put them back in the trunk. I also take the chest protector and shin guards out about once a week and spray them down with a water hose and then lay them on the top of the bushes out front of the house to dry. Hats are also laid in the back seat and when they get to looking bad I put them the dishwasher for cleaning and then hang up to dry :)

I have been using Davis shin guards for years. They are pretty light and comfortable, but I have a problem with them sliding around during the game. I ordered some pro nine last week and they arrived today. They seem pretty nice and I like the fact you can remove the pads and wash them. I have also used Fabreze on shins, cp, and cap. It seems to work pretty well.

Try tightening your Davis guards' straps. That solved the problem for me. Plus, don't forget to criss-cross them when you buckle them up.

Mine are the ivex and they only have 2 straps. I have tightened them as far as they will go due to the way the straps are attached with velcro, then I taped them tighter. They still turn. I have to straighten them at least once per half inning.

Look at the pro nine guards they are fairly inexpensive,loight and are very comfortable.

The Davis guards don't have Velcro straps, so this isn't a major issue.

I tried the Davis guards on yesterday. How do you keep the "wings" tight to your ankles? They just seemed to flap outwards.

They are nicely built, but just didn't fit me.

Good question. Mine just stay right under my pants, as I don't have them low enough to where they show that much.

I use the Honig's K-30 shins and have no problem with them slipping or twisting. They are pretty light as well.

Hey y'all. New to Forum. Just a quick note to this thread. Try the Carlucci shin guards. Cece Carlucci aka Mr. Ump has been making custom umpire gear for 40 years. It is not off the shelf stuff and therefor a little more expensive than other gear but by far the best.

Sorry, hit the wrong key. Anyway. Cece Carlucci makes some outstanding gear. I have had his shins, chest protector and ball bags since the mid 80's. It has been repaired a few times but fact is, it's still doing it's job. I do 50+ games every year and will hopefully never have to wear any other protective equipment.
