Eric Cooper

He has umpired 2 no hitters from behind home plate. He was behind the plate for Randy Johnson in Atlanta, 2 years ago.

pingswinger Thu Apr 19, 2007 08:07am

That was greg gibson 2 years ago in ATL.

mattmets Thu Apr 19, 2007 09:37am

Cooper had Hideo Nomo's no-hitter in 2001, so he has had 2.

But as Pingswinger said, Gibson had Johnson's perfecto.

Mike Reilly and Jeff Kellogg also worked Anibel Sanchez' no-no last September in Miami, in addition to last night's in Chicago.

It appears that Des Moines, Iowa is leading the pack in no-hitters, according to this article in the Des Moines Register:

Buehrle’s gem was Cooper’s second no-hitter — he umpired the plate when Hideo Nomo, then pitching for the Boston Red Sox, no-hit Baltimore on April 5, 2001.

“Count them up,” Cooper said. “The Des Moines-area guys have cornered the market on no-hitters.”

Tim McClelland, a major league umpire who lives in West Des Moines, has worked the plate for one no-hitter.

Mike Everitt, a major league umpire living in Des Moines, also has one as a plate umpire.

“That’s pretty neat, given the size of our city,” Cooper said. “It’s certainly something to brag about.”

I believe McClelland and Cooper host a radio show in the offseason. Cool stuff... I just wish Cooper was on Crew A this year with Young, Barrett, and Carlson.

Young works the plate on a regular basis, and he looks pretty damn sharp in the scissors.

Yes, I was talking about Larry.

Just 3 more and he'll be an official 'ace.'

SanDiegoSteve Fri Apr 20, 2007 10:13am

Larry Young worked the plate in the Dodgers/Padres game on Friday, April 13th, and looked pretty sharp in the scissors. He did get a few gripes on his strike zone, however.

Larry Young is/was also a professional wrestling referee. Ken Kaiser was a professional wrestler before becoming an umpire.

I don't know why I posted this info. I guess just to show that I can be a jock sniffer, too, in a lot of threads...if I wanted to. :D

Just for clarity, was Larry Young a professional referee for wrestling, or a referee for "professional" wrestling?

Not sure that I'd admit to that in writing :D

Sorry, I'm trying to point out that I could post on and on about personal tidbits and factoids if I wanted to on this board...but I (generally) don't.

I believe he (Larry) is working the dish in the Cardinals/Cubs game right now.

My mistake. As I get all of the Padres games, they sometimes blur together. It was Saturday, April 14th, in the Padres 7-2 defeat of the Dodgers, as Jake Peavy went to 2-0, and Larry Young worked the plate, looked sharp blah blah blah, etc.

James Hoye, and from all replays, he got it right.

Larry Young and crew had an interesting finish to their game today. Got'em both right! Anyone else see the two plays I'm talking about? The interference and then the off the bag after the walk?

I would have not have known Eric Cooper was the umpire of the no hitter unless he didn't get his mask knocked off with a foul ball in the top of the ninth and they used his name. For the record, Young is 53 years old. He is bow legged.

I saw them. I even TIVO'd them to take another look.

They both got them right--eventually--but the manner in which both calls were handled just goes to show that even MLB umpires can mess things up. Being human isn't easy. The sliding past second on a ball four to the batter is a no-brainer. Why Teddy, who was my roommate at umpire school, BTW, didn't do anything but point was rather perplexing. There was no need to have yet another umpire's committee meeting--the 2nd or 3rd of the game, I believe--to decide something as simple as R1 sliding past second base on a walk, then being tagged while off and past the base.
