OK I can retire, Now I have seen everything

Had a very interesting day today.

On the way to my HS game I drove by a field saying _______ _______ Club DH, 5:00 P.M. It is an NCAA D1 major conference school hosting another big D1 club team.

Great, I get to watch some good baseball.

Go to my game, 1st 5 innings are 0-0, about 40 minutes. Then visitors go up 1-0, then home team ties it at 1-1. Great game, lots of plays, some bad decisions, 3 guys out at 3B, one guy thrown out trying to steal with 2 out ad the lead run on 3B.

Then there is a very close no-call on R1 on INF, leads to 3 runs for the visitors. 4-1 bottom of 7, Home team gets first two guys on, then an out, then something I though I would never see happens. Grounder to F4, who throws to 2B (1st mistake), then F6 starts looking for the ball. My partner calls nothing, and I thought: "Come on it's not that tough a call." Then F8 and F4 converge on 2B, my partner calls time.

"Huh?"

Then here comes my partner. F4 threw the ball towards F6, and the ball goes inside the sleveless jersey of R1 and gets stuck in his uni! He untucks his shirt, th eball falls out, and he gives the ball to F6. My partner says (who is a long time vet, and should know by now), "What do we do?"

Rookie quiz of the day: What do you do?

Home team scores twice, leaves the tying run on 3B, and then I head to other ball yard. When I get there, they have just started game #2 (game #1 was a 1 hitter by the home guys), and there is one umpire! What? So I go down, volunteer my services, and get game #2 with two D1 club teams. The local college assn, could find two guys, so they sent some guy out by himself to do the DH.

Had two really screwy plays on the bases, a bunch of bangers, a D1 partner who talked and communicated with me, and I had a great time, plus another game check. It seems that there are so many rainouts to be made up, there were not enough umpires to cover everything. So this guy who does mostly D1/D2 BB is stuck doing this by himself.

What a day. And the HS game was on radio, and at least two newspapers were there covering the game.

Any rookie who doesn't answer "apply rule 8-3-3f" has to work a season's worth of games with (names deleted).
