Because FED has a stupid rule that if the pitcher balks, the ball becomes dead.

I didn't call "Time. Baulk." I called "Time. Balk." because the ball is dead on a balk in games played under NFHS rules just as it used to be under OBR.

I would have handled it the same. The first 2 i would have let go as you did. When he made that a-hole comment, he's done.

Nope. I knew there would be those who would "try to keep him in the game" and choose to take this from an assistant coach. I have seen umpires who accept being loudly shown-up by coaches yelling across the diamond about judgment calls. I am embarrassed for them.

In Washington the online FED clinic emphasised getting control of assistant coaches. It explained, again, that only the head coach is given the right to discuss issues with the umpires and that assistant coaches would be ejected if they forgot this.

Coaches are required to take our on line clinic and pass a short quiz that accompanies it. They must have problems retaining what they have learned beyond the 40 minute clinic.

Garth it's too bad you didn't know right off the get go that it was the assistant coach uttering these statements otherwise you could have had some fun with this one.

Assistant Coach - "You can't make that call in two man mechanics!"
Umpire - "Two is all we have and they told us to make the calls."

Assistant Coach - "I know your mechanics better than you do!!"
Umpire - "Not quite because in my mechanics this is where you get tossed."

But it would be better to just let him rant and then toss him and nobody will think of you poorly, and will think of him as a fool.
