New Wilson Mask

It's flattness will absorb, rather than deflect the ball, much like my old SUL.

No thanks. Better vision, but more concussions. Not a good tradeoff for me.

complete WOBW

...but i will say that i dont like this mask. im looking to get a wilson, but one of the non-"new-view" models. i find this model funny because its not new -- i had a rawlings mask that was flat like this almost 10 years ago.

I've used this mask for the last few years and have had no problems with it. I've gotten hit square in the mask in D-1 games, and both the mask and I have survived with no damage.

I can identify with your position. I defended my plus pos zero gravity mask for nearly three season against mounting criticism and evidence of damage. I had taken hits and saw no damage.

Finally, I took two hits to the same spot in an upper level game and the mask caved in.

I bought one of the "new" Wilsons, and again, I've had no personal issues, however, the reports of increased concussions from the MiLB umpires and the terrible angle of the throat guard has me looking for yet another.

UMP25 Sun Apr 01, 2007 02:31pm

Garth,

On all my masks of this type, I have one of those smaller style throat guards attached as added protection. I've gotten hit there pretty good a few times, and I can say that without that throat guard I stuck on it, I'd have been in serious trouble!

GarthB Sun Apr 01, 2007 02:37pm

I have had to add a "dangler" for the first time ever, due to the Wilson's forward protruding throat guard.

I have a short neck and my chest protector meets the built in throat guards on my old plus Pos and West Vest masks. There was never even room for a ball to come up from underneath with those masks. The Wilson is a different story.

And, I do have first hand experience with the need to protect one's throat. About five years ago, I had to borrow a mask to work a game. It had a very small throat guard and no dangler. I took a foul to the Adam's apple and spit blood for the rest of the game. I went to the emergency room after the game and was told that I was very lucking to not have suffered permanent damage. I had the world's worst sore throat for about two weeks.

Just reading that made my throat ache!

many people have managed to find this mask on their own in the last year or more.
if you are going to make a thread, try and have some substance, not just a link to a known product.

enough of this, im done feeding the troll.

When you disagree and tell boyinblue he is wrong, he will talk to you in whatever manner he wants. He is, after all, 100% correct in every situation. Coaches are just lucky to have such a bright teenager working their machine pitch games and can learn from his insights.

I think this forum ought to have a minimum age requirement to post. That might take care of you-know-who. ;)

Throat Guard it is...

So is everyone telling me that since I bought this mask, I will more then likely need a throat guard? I'm a newbie, so be nice. I like the mask. I've noticed how the throat guard goes "forward" so there is some areas of the throat that are left open...But as some say, "it'll never happen to ME!" (jk)

My personal opinion is that an additional dangling throat guard should be used with every traditional mask, even the ones with the extended frame. I've never gone without one. Each year I've been hit square on the throat guard and have felt it; however, as strong as the hits have been, it's just the force of the hit that I felt. Without the throat guard, I can't even imagine what I would have felt. For me, the guards have meant the difference between simply getting hit and suffering serious injury.

"You know who" is a phony. He is not a young eager to learn umpire. He is an older anonymous troll. Age has no bearing on idiots.

canadaump6 Thu Apr 05, 2007 11:54am

Wow I see that my post got deleted for pointing out that some umpires on here like to amuse themselves by sitting behind a computer screen and typing insults to the starter of the thread. I guess the moderators have an axe to grind:eek: . Quite biased if you ask me.

Indeed it doesn't.

Yeah you guys keep on typing those insults up:D . Whatever you've gotta do to stay amused.

kylejt Thu Apr 05, 2007 05:26pm

To the point at hand, don't hang the throat protector off the lower rung. Move it up, and inward, and hang it there. To test it, put on your chest protector and mask, and draw your fist up toward your throat at about a 45 degree angle. The inboard placement will get those balls, where the outward one won't.

A) That's not why it was deleted. It was deleted because it had a link to a non-relevant You-Tube (or something) video.

B) No one asked you.

C) As far as I can tell, the starter of the thread has typed the most (and the most egregious) insults in this thread.

A) Sorry about the Youtube video.

B) I know nobody asked me, but nobody else seemed to care that we've got a gang of individuals sitting behind computer screens to flame a less experienced umpire.

C) I have never had any problems with boyinblue. He hasn't said anything that should offend anyone on here because the people that his comments were directed at deserved what they got. I will echo the statement he made earlier on in this thread; Umpdick, **** you, you *******.

To sum things up, the "moderators" on this forum are a complete joke. You chose to ban boyinblue because a bunch of flamers on this board decided to insult him. What is with some of you veteran umpires?

Hey Canada, I've been officiating [insert number here] but on this board only a year. Take your spot in the pecking order moe.

This is what Chuck posted. What did he say here to draw such nasty comments?

There was really no call for that. That is the reason you get such negative feedback. I've always tried to back you up on stuff, but you make it really hard when you curse someone out for no reason at all.
