Can anyone suggest any good umpire books.

"Cokalinski: The Ricky Bobby of Umpiring", by Lance Cokalinski. Amazon has it.

All of the works by the late, great Ron Luciano. I've heard that Kaiser's is a good read, haven't got to that one yet though.

Making other real umpires on the board see it my way by Little League Dan with Foreward by BoyinBlue

Start with the red book..Manual for the two-umpire system, as well as the PBUC manual. Just know according to my assignor/association president, that only works in the pros. Don't know why, but according to them it only works in the pros.

"You're Out and You're Ugly, Too" Durwood Merrill. Joe Brinkman also has a great book out, just can't remember the name.

When all else fails, the rule book will pass in a pinch.

I read Ken Kaiser's book. I thought it was clever, so I decided I would research this guy a little bit. So I googled him and lo and behold his address and phone number was right there so I called him and he hung up on me. Not cool. Durwood's book was good to. Luciano's books are clever as well. All those are good entertaining reads, but if you want to learn something, read the little red book, the rule book, the case book, take random quizzes you can find on the internet. Read the BRD too, I learned a lot from it as well.

(1) Center Field on Fire by Dave Phillips
(2) Please Don't Kill the Umpire by John Massaro
(3) Men in Blue by Larry Gerlach
(4) You're Out, and You're Ugly Too Durwood Merrill
(5) Baseball's Knotty Problems The Sporting News

If you can find a Knotty Problems book, get it. It's great for new umpires, but it's hard to find. Check ebay

Do a search for baseball knotty problems on www.amazon.com and you will find some used copies. Most of the books listed that are written by umpires are entertainment. Cubfan needs to answer the question if he is interested in entertainment or knowledge books. Knotty problems is knowledge.

i was looking for knowlege books

UmpJM Sun Mar 18, 2007 08:49pm

cubfan,

I would suggest starting with this one:

Better Spelling in 30 Minutes a Day , by Robert Emery and Harry Crosby.

http://www.amazon.com/Better-Spellin...4268265&sr=1-1

Sorry, that was irresistible.

Seriously, two I would recommend are:

The Rules of Professional Baseball, by Chris Jaksa and Rick Roder. (aka J/R)

http://www.rulesofbaseball.com/

Baseball Rule Differences, by Carl Childress. (aka BRD)

http://shop.officiating.com/x/product/brd2006

I would also suggest a mechanics manual such as the PBUC "red book" or the CCA manual.

The Manual for The Two Umpire System (PBUC red book) is 2 man mechanics only. The CCA manual, has 2, 3 and 4 man mechanics. If you are just starting you are not likely to need 3 and 4 man for awhile. The PBUC Umpire Manual is a decent book also.
