The Young Brother's Attitudes
 

After all the problems that Dmitri Young had on and off the field last year (alcohol, divorce, depression, etc...) now he's blaming the Tigers for not "sticking with him".

Got me to thinking about both him and his blowhard brother - if you remember right this was the kid that mouthed off about not being treated as a "star" in the major league locker room ("I ain't picking up my own towels!") , and the same kid that threw the bat at the umpire after striking out. Who the heck raised these kids? Were they born with a silver spoon in their mouths or did they live the hard life on the other side of the tracks? If both boys have similar responses when they don't get their way, it makes me wonder what kind of parents they had! Anybody know their background?

I suggest that the background is of no interest to you.

Considering the BU asked, essentially - were they rich or were they poor, does anyone know, and implied only wonder, not blame, regarding the parenting or lack thereof of the Youngs' parents, I think he did exactly the opposite of prejudging. He seems to be trying to get some facts before judging. Isn't that what we are supposed to do?

Delmon Young is a grown man who makes his own decisions. Those have included throwing a bat at a pitcher in 2005, bumping an umpire in 2005 and throwing a bat at an umpire in 2006.

High school team mates referred to him as arrogant. When he was signed out of high school he was asked what kind of player he would be. He answered, "A superstar."

Sounds like an over indulged brat used to getting his way and who has had adults in different roles in his life: coaches, counselors, agents and perhaps parents that indeed allowed him to do so.

Unfortunately he's not unique.

I would have chased and beat him with that bat had he thrown it at me. :)

I am not so sure I am kidding either. Of course, in Oregon, it is a felony offense to strike a game official. I know for sure I would have pressed charges on him.

You choose to not get facts before making a judgement about something/someone? Surely that's not what you mean.

If you are saying that you simply choose not to make judgements at all, you're fooling yourself. People make judgements about other people all the time. Can I trust this person? Should I hire this person? Is this the sort of person I want my child around? ... Is this coach going to get it if I warn him, or does he simply need to be sent packing? Etc. To simply say that you don't judge anyone ever at all under any circumstance? Sounds nice, but you're fooling yourself.

I might be interested in someones background from a sociological perspective, but that has no bearing on anything related to umpiring. I sure hope we don't alter our expectations for behavior based on the 'backgrounds' of the participants in the game. I sure don't.

I couldn't get your link to show, but last year I had read something to the effect that a cloud was lifted from the clubhouse when the Tigers released Dimitri and they kept Sean Casey, who was upbeat, nice to be around, a hitter and a fielder, ... but slower than a 7-year-itch. :)

My limited coaching experience (12 years) makes me believe that the best teams I had were the ones where all the players worked hard, respected and liked each other, and played as a team, with team goals in mind.

And one bad apple could spoil a whole bunch...
