Need a little help

My roomate, (who has played baseball all his life), and I made a friendly bet concerning fair and foul balls which goes as follows; I say if a bouncing ball is hit and lands inside fair territory in the infield and then bounces past, or over, either 1st or 3rd base while still in fair territory but lands in foul territory, (before it touches in fair but after it passes either bag) is still a fair ball. He says it's foul. Can anyone help me out there?

Talking You must have seen the Martinez replay........

If you watched the last game of the ALCS last night when Martinez pulled one over third base and it was called foul...............
it will show your statement to be wrong.

The correct statement is that it must be JUDGED to have gone over the base fair................
then it's fair, even if it lands foul behind the base.

Even if it goes over the base fair, if the ump's call is foul, then it's foul.........LOL.
IMO, the foul call on Martinez' batted ball last was rather questionable---although questioning it would have served little purpose....

Just my opinion,

Thumbs up

You've got your answer (fair ball). The problem will probably be convincing your friend that, even with all his years of experience, he is incorrect.

Go to mlb.com and check out the definitions of fair/foul, and have them ready for your friend.

You know...in my mind that hit should still should have been ruled fair. It sure appeared to bound over third base, didn't it.

Yes Frank, the one that you described should be "judged" to be a fair ball.

When the ball goes over the bag, it's a fair ball, PERIOD.

Jim:

The original post made reference to a "bouncing ball", not a ball in flight.
