umpire camp

i am considering attending the southern umpires camp in atlanta - feb 15-18
tuition is $399 including 3 nights hotel.

http://baseballumpirecamps.com/southern.html

i've been doing high school ball and summer college wood bat. i was recently accepted into 2 college groups for next year. i've had no formal training, but several college and pro school mentors who have steered me in the right direction.
do this camp make sense for me? any other recommendations?

thanks.

The Southern Camp is serious. There are a number of Harry's grads that are sent there for a second look and Tony Thompson (the owner) assigns the big D1 schools. Several of Harry's instructors teach there. When I went it was Nauert, Hickox, Davis, and Rippley. Brian Hale (AAA) and several NCAA D1 guys were there. If they know what you are looking for, they will help you out. The February sessions are two man, in November its 3 man.

does the wendlestat camp have a website?

Ive been to the Southern Camp, its worth the time and money. I gained a good deal from it, I think. The 2-man camp (Feb) is suitable for the less-experienced umpire, but be prepared for Nauert to take a chunk out of your a** during the field drills :D

The main instructors are Nauert, Crawford, Hale now, IIRC.

I would suggest you go. I was just at the Southeast Umpires camp in Miami. Not only will you gain a wealth of information and insight, but you will see for yourself where you stand in comparison to other umpires of your experience level.Have fun and learn

But even if you can't make it this year, don't forget to list it on your CDP resume....hey, you THOUGHT about it, right?

bossman72 Tue Nov 28, 2006 09:01pm

hey i have a somewhat off topic camp related question:

if say you wanted to attend one of these 5 week camps, what do you guys that have regular hour (9-5) jobs do? How can you miss that much work?

what about guys that have families and other commitments that will have to be put aside for 5 weeks?

Simple - you must be willing to make the sacrifice on the 10% chance you will get a chance to make $1,900 /month for 1/2 the year.

Otherwise, go to a few of the one week courses over a period of 2-3 years.
