Time to change - Closing of Threads
 

IMO, if we want this Forum to be a valuable resource, then some things should change. Too many posts are getting deleted. Even in a flame war thread there are some good responses that get 'lost in the shuffle". Perhaps through technology a better system could be implemented.

I realize this is a Free Forum and proabably does not generate any revenue, but it would be beneficial if certain responses could be deleted instead of the entire thread. Keep only those responses that stay on Topic.

Another thing that could be done is in the regsitration area. If the same individuals are the ones turning the thread into flame-wars then perhaps their registration ID could be deleted by not allowing them to post here anymore. I know they could sign up again under a different ID but as mentioned, if the registration process was different perhaps it could be tracable.

IMO, his Forum was once the best around in it's initial stages and it could be once again. It's ok to be silly and humerous once in a while but generally speaking stay on topic.

Side Note: I didn't get a chance to respond to the thread about the first base pivot, but there is another acceptable approach in addition to what Bob gave.

Some umpires have knee/ankle problems and simply cannot pivot. if that's the case, then you simply move "straight in" (make certain you do not colide with F3), make sure you glance at the runner touching the bag and also any possible OBS. You are also in position to take the runner into second by staying ahead of him.

Having to moderate your peers must be one of the toughest jobs in the world. It's also a thankless job and you sureashell ain't ever gonna keep everybody happy. But.....the only people that the mods really have to keep fairly happy are the people who own this site and appointed them moderators in the first place.

Let them do what they're supposed to do.

And yes, they've got rid of some of my posts in the past when I got out of line too. Probably will in the future too, no doubt. Whether I agreed with them or not at the time really is irrelevant. They're just doing their job. If they weren't, this would be McGriffs <i>redux</i>.

I think you have an amazingly flawed idea of what the First Amendment says. Perhaps you could read it again. It COMPLETELY doesn't apply to a site like this.

That can be done, and is done quite frequently. But, sometimes there are too many negative responses to delete. So, I (or other moderators) just delete the thread.

That's also done, but,as you point out, a person can register under a different user name and / or email address.

It doesn't matter. If three individuals are fighting amongst themselves, getting rid of any two will solove the problem.

Perhaps you could explain it for all of us who don't understand.

I believe that mcrowder was suggesting that the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States has nothing to do with the rights of the owners/operators/moderators of this site to delete or censor anything posted as they see fit - because it doesn't. If said parties choose to "abridge the freedom of speech" of those who post here, for whatever reason, they are free to do so and there is no Constitutional prohibition preventing them.

The Constitution only prohibits Congress from enacting laws which constrain the right to free speech.

At least that's what I believe he was suggesting.

Too, it would be beneficial if certain responses would be withheld.

If threads are deleted, it is probably, as Bob implied, because they have become too tedious to edit individual posts. If threads are locked, they probably have been adjudged to retain useful information on the screen.

As I write this, there are 13 members and 42 guests using the forum. Who can identify the guests as players, fans, parents, coaches. little brothers and sisters, ...Moms? The public deserves a certain amount of civility and professionalism, and because of members like you, they'll probably come back to learn stuff..

No 'Tain't perfect, but thanks for your thoughts.

So Mick, why can't a moderator go into a "productive" thread -- edit out the idiot comments, THEN lock the thread so that it available for reference but without the trash?

As you know, a moderator is able to do that, post by post, line by line, word by word and $$ by $$, if a moderator is so inclined.

You'll get NO emails from me asking you to take away another member's privilege or asking you to delete someone else's comments. If I ever discuss the PIVOT with a NEWUMP, again nevermind, that job doesn't belong to me.
