More check swing questions....
 

A couple months ago we discussed this sitch (I will boil it down here to save digging)...
R1 stealing with two outs and two strikes, batter check swings, F2 retires runner, then the defense appeals the check swing, getting strike three, which erases the CS, and a new batter leads off the next inning. It was agreed that this could be beneficial to the defense if the batter were a heavy hitter.

My question is, can the offensive team appeal a check swing? Maybe the above sitch happens late in the game, with the batting team losing, and the #9 hitter at the plate. If R1 is retired, the defense is not going to (or at least shouldn't) appeal the check swing so the #9 man leads off the next inning. The offense, however, would like to appeal the swing, and have the top of the order lead off the next inning. (I admit that the coach would really have to be paying attention to do this, but I don't think this is a TWP).

In 9.02(b) and the note to 9.03 (c), the rule book refers only to 'the manager' or 'managers'. It does not denote offensive or defensive, unless you infer that 'The manager or the catcher...' in the note to 9.03(c) refers de facto to the defensive manager.

Any thoughts?

NEVER. It's a defensive option only.

(c) The manager or the catcher may request the plate umpire to ask his partner for help on a half swing when the plate umpire calls the pitch a ball, but not when the pitch is called a strike.... Appeals on a half swing may be made only on the call of ball and when asked to appeal, the home plate umpire must refer to a base umpire for his judgment on the half swing. Should the base umpire call the pitch a strike, the strike call shall prevail.

I say the base umpire should come in before the defensive team leaves the field and inform everybody that the batter is out and not the runner. I know some guys think we should wait to be asked, but why do that when you know your partner missed something and you can help fix it?:cool:

I have umpired for a few years now. This is a major pet peave of mine. The umpires one the field, whethere there are 1, 2, 3, 4 or more, are on the same side and should NEVER do something to make their partner look bad. The fans, etc. finds enough stuff to yell at. In fact, the initial check swing call is the plate umpires entirely. The base umpire is there just for help if the plate umpire needs it or asks for it.

If I were on the field with you and you came down the line on me, when you got to me, I would tell you to get back to your position. And would then likely ask the assignor to not put me back on the field with you.

I understand guys make mistakes, but this is a mistake that is not forgiveable. You can blow a safe/out, ball.strike or whatever, but making your partner look bad is the ultimate sin.

We all know this is hogwash.

However, what do you do as a baseump when you see a batter fouls one off his foot? Do you wait for the plate ump to call it or do you immediately call time??

Some guys I work with want the base ump to help immediately and other don't want the base ump to say anything unless asked.

My preference is to wait until asked because its not my place to make a call for the PU.

Exactly. If you see it, call it. Same with HPB. You shouldn't wait for your partner to come to you for help.
