funny question

Heres one for ya guys that will get some laughs, when you say "strike", whats it sound like? :D Ive heard all kinds of stuff, when I say strike, it ends up being "he-hike". whats yours sound like :p

aceholleran Fri Aug 18, 2006 01:23am

I do believe I tend to say "hike."

SanDiegoSteve Fri Aug 18, 2006 02:22am

Hah!!! (very loud, short, and crisp)

BoomerSooner Fri Aug 18, 2006 04:01am

Mine comes out more like "two more" followed by "last chance", and finally "no soup for you".

mcrowder Fri Aug 18, 2006 08:13am

Haaahhhh!!!!!!! for a called strike.
Short "Heek" for swinging

Tim C Fri Aug 18, 2006 08:22am

Mmmm,

"Short "Heek" for swinging"

Huh!

You verbalize swinging strikes?

Regards,

Fritz Fri Aug 18, 2006 09:42am

Boomer, you're killing me here........where is your next stop on the Comedy tour?

ctblu40 Fri Aug 18, 2006 09:52am

I think (after having the people sitting net to me right now jump out of their seats) mine sounds like, "Hee!"
For called third stike it sounds like "Heek Hee!"

Both are crisp, loud and short.

BTW- I never verbalize a swinging strike, tends to pi$$ off the batters, I think.

Justme Fri Aug 18, 2006 10:00am

Mine is a simple "STRI EKE", sometimes as I get tired "STRI HEKE"

bossman72 Fri Aug 18, 2006 11:03am

"Hike!" on strikes 1 and 2.

"Three!" on strike 3.

rookieblue Fri Aug 18, 2006 11:35am

bossman,

I like - crisp, short, not overly dramatic. Being new to this, I'm still prone to a bit of scenery chewing, so anything to tone done (where appropriate) can only improve my games. Thank you.

nickrego Fri Aug 18, 2006 11:48am

STRIKE !

It used to be HIKE when I wore a mask (couldn't get the STR out), but then I switched to a helmet, and magically, I could pronounce S's again ! (no pressure on your chin)

OMG. And I thought you couldn't more ridiculous about the mask/helmet thing than you already had. Onced again, I've been proven wrong.

LLPA13UmpDan Fri Aug 18, 2006 12:10pm

but the finniest part i find is, no matter hwo you say it, everyone still knows what you are calling :) I have the same problem when i wear my regular mask, i cant quite say strike, but when i use my hockey mask i can say it,,,

rookieblue Fri Aug 18, 2006 12:20pm

GarthB - :D

In point of fact, I can and do say "STRIKE" quite intelligibly with a conventional mask on.

[thread hijack]
I was watching the local broadcast of the Orioles' oh-so-sweet (for its rarity) pasting of the Yankees yesterday. Late in the game, C.B. Bucknor took a foul squarely in the face of his HSM, a blow which dropped him to his knees. Color man Buck Martinez gave a fairly lengthy dissertation on why - for that type of blow - the conventional mask distributes the impact better than the HSM. I will not comment further on Mr. Martinez's appreciation of either human skeletal anatomy, or physics. I am happy to report, Mr. Bucknor was fine and completed the game with no ill effects evident. I simply can't fathom how weak your jaws must be.

Despit Nick's problems with s's, the jaw doesn't drop when pronouncing the s sound in strike...it drops to facilitate the "r" and "i" sounds.

Loosen your straps before lockjaw sets in.

LLPA13UmpDan Fri Aug 18, 2006 01:58pm

I cant stand to have my mask loose. Its very uncomforatable for me.

The splat sound you heard was the joke hitting the wall behind you after it whizzed by and you missed it.

Tim C Fri Aug 18, 2006 02:32pm

Hmmm,

"I cant stand to have my mask loose. Its very uncomforatable for me."

So Dan can I assume that you do not know how a mask is supposed to be worn, right?

You don't know (i.e. have never been taught) that a mask should "hang" from your face and NOT be tight. That the engineering of masks is for them to "spin around" or even "spring off" when struck by a ball.

That the design of a mask represents the same technology of disapating shock like a F1 race car that wrecks, right?

"HAH" on strikes 1 and 2.
"HIKE HREE" on a punchout.

Since when do we verbalize a swinging strike?

I can only think of a couple of situations where we would verbalize anything on a swing:
1-Check Swing - "He went;"
2-Swinging strike three, possibly in the dirt - either "That's a catch, Out" or "Three, no catch."

Regards,

I have one of the new wilson masks that have the wrap around padding around the edge (to prevent mask frame from slamming into head). and mask is loose enough i can pull it off easy, but if its too loose my mask starts coming off.

The wrap around padding is meant to prevent the bars from bending when the are hit by a foul ball or pitch, not to stop them from "slamming into head." (which doesn't really ever happen anyway.) When you take a shot in the mask it should never (if worn properly) "slam into head" it should (as others have already said) twist off to one side, or pop completely off your head.

Your mask should be loose enough that if you wear it without a hat it slips down to your eyes.

When I first started umpiring, I wore my mask too tight as well. I would take a shot in the mask and it would stay perfectly positioned on my face.

One day, I took a wicked foul ball square to the middle of the mask, and I was seeing stars!
There I am, behind the dish, down on 1 knee, and my partner (a veteran) comes to check on me.
"You okay?", says he.
"I dunno.", says I.
"Loosen you @*%#ing straps!", says he.

I wish I saw this thread before getting hit by that one, I'm sure it would've helped.

Amazing. A $90 mask protects you properly only when worn properly.

I say STRIIIIKE, with emphasis on the "i" sound

speaking to the other topic of this forum, i'm sure I never would have passed my field test this past year if I verbalized anything after a swinging strike on a regular basis

Does anyone wear a HSM at the LL level?

Really?

Yes, at most LL fields, the ball ricochets back off the closely set backstops and often hits you in the head. I think LL is the best example of why HSM's should be used. It's like umpiring in a batting cage on those fields.
