A Smile From the Baseball Gods...

I worked the plate today for a Babe Ruth League 16-18 district tournament game... first pitch at 5 pm. When we got to our cars after the 1-0, 7 inning contest, the clock read 5:58. This was by far the fastest 7 inning game I've ever called! My previous record was 1:22 or so.

I guess this means I have a 3:30 game on the horizon  .

What was the fastest game you've ever called? Longest?

tjones1 Sat Aug 05, 2006 07:33pm

Fastest game I've had was around 1:10. The longest... don't remember cause as soon as I got home, I drowned myself in suds to try and forget about it. Looks like it worked! ;)

58 minute LL game once.

1hr 18 min on the big field, 7 innings

2:10 for 9 innings big field

SanDiegoSteve Sat Aug 05, 2006 07:50pm

1:12 HS Varsity - 7 innings.

1:57 NABA - 9 innings.

DG Sat Aug 05, 2006 08:28pm

Fastest for 7 inning game on the big field = 1:10

I have had several 3:30 minute games in my time. I think that is the longest I can recall. The most recent ones were 10 inning games that were supposed to be 7.

I had a college wood bat game last summer that went 10 innings in 2:10. Score was 2-2 from the 5th until top of 10th.

7 Innings, 18 Under: 1:07. This past June, actually.

A Sr. LL game recently -- 1 hour flat.

Adult baseball 9 innings, 1:28.

Last season I had a game go 4:14 -- it ended on a walkoff HR in the bottom of the 14th inning.

Is the adult game the one you and I worked in Phoenix? I was thinking that one we had was that fast or faster, but I don't remember the exact time.

i had a college wood bat DH start at 12:00 and i was in the door of my house at 3:58, and i live 35 minutes away.

4 hours total
-35 mintues to get home
-10 minutes of BSing after game
-20 minutes between games
-------------
2:55 worth of baseball on the field, putting the back to back games around the 1:30 mark each.

Lawrence.Dorsey Sat Aug 05, 2006 11:00pm

Over the last two years I have had at least one Jr. American Legion game go at 1:30 or under (7 innings). I had one two years ago that went 1:20.

Fastest 7 inning game was an hour and five minutes. Fastest 9 inning one hour and 36 minutes. Fastest double header with a 20-minute break, three and a half hours. Longest game five hours and 45 minutes (17 innings).

Your DH even beat my longest 7 inning plate game ever: HS Varsity, 24-11 final (before the FED 10-run rule era began), 4:16. 3:00 PM start, walked off at 7:16 PM. Pitching was non-existent.

Tim C Sun Aug 06, 2006 07:15am

Hmmm,

Shortest : 6 1/2 inning high school game 0:42 (Not a misprint 42 minutes).

Longest: College game 17 innings -- 16-15 5:01 (with an additional 32 minute rain delay not counted).

SDS: In my tri-county area we STILL don't have a 10 run rule.

Regards,

No, it was one I had in Madison -- I had forgotten the one in Phoenix, but we did have a quickie there.

We had a 7-inning game (adult, wood bat) last season here go something like 1:05. Lots of first pitch groundouts and 2 3-pitch innings.

We had the 10-run rule for a couple years, but the California Interscholastic Federation removed it because coaches complained that their pitchers and other players weren't getting enough playing time when the games ended early.

Gaff Sun Aug 06, 2006 02:43pm

Today MSBL 9 innings 1:47
Last April High School 2 hitter 1:10
Last April High School 7 innings 4:25 (the game from hell)

UMP25 Mon Aug 07, 2006 01:32am

Longest: This year, 21 innings in an NJCAA Regional game. Time: 4:31. And yes, I was doing the plate. It was my second game of the day. The next day, in my second game of the day, I had the plate again in a 9-inning game that lasted 3:35! Figure that out. Oh, and the worst thing? The day after that, I had to take the spot of one of our young umpires in an emergency fill-in for THREE Little League games in a row. I don't do L.L. anymore, but got stuck with 18 more innings of plate work. All total, I had 48 innings of plate work in less than 48 hours! Needless to say, my feet had to be euthanized after that, though I DID switch to my comfortable base shoes for the second two LL games. :p

Quickest 9-inning: Today, 9 full innings (9-inning tournament games) in 1:37. Score = 2-1. Home team WAS winning 1-0 until the 7th, when the visitors scored thanks to an error. We WERE on track for an hour twenty.

Quickest game ever: in 1984, a Little League game, 47 minutes, where the visiting pitcher struck out all 18 batters he faced, 13 of them looking. Moreover, only two balls were ever contacted, one a foul off to the left side, the other a foul off to the right. No one ever touched the ball again on the home team.

aceholleran Mon Aug 07, 2006 02:23pm

good, bad and fugly

LL perfect game: 16 K's, two foul outs, no fair balls hit, 5 1/2 innings: 46 min.

LL 3 1/2 innings, with Kevorkian 10-run rule: 38 min.

HS, 7 full: 1:12

LL, 9 innings, 3:50

johnnyg08 Mon Aug 07, 2006 04:35pm

Adult amateur baseball 9 innings 1:28 mins...score was 7 - 1...all of the runs were scored in the bottom of the 1st...then the losing team got one garbage run in the 8th...no walks, and players were swinging.

One of my colleagues worked a 28 inning 1 - 0 game 5 hrs 50 minutes...one of the longest games in MN baseball history.

TxUmp Tue Aug 08, 2006 06:56am

Longest game

I had a 17-inning game a few years ago that started at 7pm. We walked off the field at 1:40am - 6 hr, 40 min. And it was a great game - both teams scored in 3 of the extra innings - final score 7-6, home team winning (later won state championship that year).

Oh by the way - this was the Varsity game of a JV/V DH!!!! We started at 4:30 that afternoon. Total time 9hrs, 10 min.

Not the quickest

Not the quickest but still humorous...

From my minor league days:

Had a July 4th game scheduled for 7:05. Fireworks are scheduled for after the game. This particular year, Independence Day fell during the middle of the week.

GM calls us at the hotel and says they want to move the game time up to 6:00. He says that with the holiday being in the middle of the week, they think they'll get a bigger crowd if they start at 6 with the fireworks starting at around 9 or 9:30 instead of 10 or 10:30. We say no problem.

I was on the plate. We played a full nine innings in 1:43. It was only 7:43 when the game was over. This team was in the northeast and that far north and that early in the summer, they had to wait an hour and fifteen minutes for it to get dark enough to light the fireworks.

After the game Bob Stanley (former Red Sox relief pitcher) who was the pitching coach for the home team said to me, "If you were around ten years ago, I'd still be in the majors!" GM says, "damn if we knew you guys would be done that fast, we would have left the start time at 7."

(As an aside...I heard NOTHING about my strike zone from anyone. Just had a lot of good pitching and a lot of batters swinging.)

UMP25 Tue Aug 08, 2006 01:11pm

Just after I get through posting that my game two days ago was a 9-inning regular game that lasted only 1:37, Bob J. and I worked a CICL playoff game last night that went 13 innings and 3:43. Well, at least it wasn't MY plate job last night.

At least Bob made it interesting. He tossed the visiting team's manager for arguing balls and strikes in a less than complimentary manner. :D

LomUmp Tue Aug 08, 2006 02:35pm

Hey all,

SHORTEST:

LL: 1:25 10-11YO District championship game (complete game 1-0)

Men's adult league: 1:40

LONGEST:

LL: multiple 3hr+ (sometimes they just can' hit the strike zone!)

Men's adult league: 5 innings 31-8, 3:30, home team lost, didn''t make it to the 10 run rule after 7 innings:eek:. Home team decided to call the game because the game time for the second game was only 30 minutes away.
