Miss even a half of days work and pay a medical bill for x-rays and treatment after you break a toe by not wearing a pair, and you'll have spent enough to buy 5 pairs of plate shoes. $120.00 is well spent unless you're a sadist.

When I first started I bought a pair of steel toed black athletic shoes from Sears for around $40.00. Just make sure you wear shin guards with metatarsal protection.

65 bones for patent leather plate shoes. Spend the extra dough.

LLPA13UmpDan Sat Jul 15, 2006 09:07pm

$65 is a good price. Might get those.

Tim, I believe the word you were looking for was masochist.:)

Gaff Sat Jul 15, 2006 09:33pm

They look good to me

I had a chance to look at the $65 plate shoes from inhouse and they seem as good as Honigs. They also have nice base shoes.

briancurtin Sat Jul 15, 2006 09:41pm

New Balance plate shoes - best $95 ive ever spent towards umpiring.

ggk Sat Jul 15, 2006 10:17pm

in house plate shoes

the in house plate shoes look very, very similar to honigs - but they are about $50 cheaper. how is the quality? do they look like they will last??

take a guess

do you want to have these shoes last for more than one season? if yes, id say don't buy these knock offs.

Have you actually seen them? Someone who has said they were exactly like the Honigs. Same sole, etc. I'd really like to know from someone who's actually bought them.

They sell other gear by reputable sources, why would you assume their shoes are shoddy?

I bought Spot-Builts (locally for over $100) that sucked when they were brand new because they have a "hard" toe not a steel toe. At least these are steel toed. That makes them worth the $65 to $70, even if they don't last. At least my toes wouldn't get all messed up like they did.

price tells me a lot. honigs tries pretty hard to have good stuff at good prices, in both my experiences with them and in talking to them. if they could offer their shoes for $50 less than they are currently charging, im guessing that they would do it.

its purely an assumption that these shoes are sub-par quality, one that could easily be wrong. i just think price tells me more than i need to know about them.

I bought a pair of gear bags from +POS a few years ago. About a week after I got them I found the exact same bags, sans the +POS logo, at a discount store for less than half the price.

If I'd only known I could have saved myself a hundred bucks, several weeks, and a bunch of phone calls.

Ummmm, I'm guessing they wouldn't. I've been doing business with Honig's for over twenty years, and while some of their stuff is very competitively priced, but I have found a lot of their stuff marked up pretty high.

One example is their McDavid Hex-pad tights. They want $57 for them, + shipping. Other places have them for $45 to $49 + shipping.

I must say that Honig's has fantastic service. They usually stock whatever I need in their California store, and I get what I need UPS ground the next day.

I've run into shoes that look like Honigs and some that look like Davis at substantially lower prices. A close inspection showed that the metatarsal plate was markedly inferior. In one case, it wasn't even metal.

Caveat Emptor.

Plate Shoes

I was the 1st person in my association to buy the patent leathe shoes from Inhouse Sports. They are the exact same shoes as the ones from Hoenigs. Several other umpires from my assoc have gotten them and are well satisfied. I've used the all season and unless something really unusual happens to them, I'll have the same pair next year. We've also gotten the base shoes for $39. They are very comfortable and we are planning to use them for football also. I am also gonna get a pair of their basketball shoes.

DG Tue Jul 18, 2006 09:22pm

I got my Honig's high tops back from the cobbler today. The uppers were in great shape but the soles had lost all the traction nubbys and were no longer solidly attached to the shoe, and the heels were worn down some. For $45 I got Vibram traction soles and heels installed. These shoes are already 6 years old and have had one set of heels put on them for $16 and with the new soles and heels I should be good for a couple more years at least.

LakeErieUmp Tue Jul 18, 2006 09:24pm

DG - did your cobbler have any restriction on what kind of sole you could spec out?

Sounds like it's time for some post-graduate work!

I meant it's time to start working on your post-graduate degree.

briancurtin Tue Jul 18, 2006 09:48pm

apparently im not smart enough to read yet haha, maybe i should go back. grad school will come soon though, im guessing.

LakeErieUmp Tue Jul 18, 2006 09:52pm

Brian - If you have the opportunity for grad school do so NOW. The rewards will far exceed anything else you might think you want to do. Take it from a 51 year old who wishes he had pursued his opportunities thirty years earlier.

briancurtin Tue Jul 18, 2006 10:04pm

i dont have the money for it now (wish i did), but my current job is working on setting up the whole tuition reimbursement deal, which has been in the works for a while and is supposed to be available soon. once i can get them to help me out, which im told is supposed to be soon, im going for it.

BigUmp56 Tue Jul 18, 2006 10:20pm

Brian:

Am I correct in that I remeber you mentioning you were degreed in computer science or a similar field? If so, there should be numerous corporations in the Chicago area that will pay a large portion of your post-graduate tuition while you serve an internship.

Tim.

briancurtin Tue Jul 18, 2006 10:38pm

yep, i came out of CS. there are some shops that do that, but a lot of the ones i have talked to dont offer assistance like that until you have been there for a while, since they dont want to have you run off on them after they helped you get a degree. im still evaluating the possibilities of this, and id really like to get into it soon, im just not sure how soon "soon" can be.

how about them plate shoes

No. He showed me what he had available and I picked. Nice Vibram sole and heel with aggresive traction on both.

I still think that it's money well spent on the +POS. I don't care for their service so I tried the Spot Bilts this season and took a fastball off of the toe only to find out that it wasn't a steel toed shoe, but a hard toed shoe. In hindsight I wish I had just ordered another pair of the +POS. I'd like to hear what Tim Christensen thought of the Nike plate shoes he had the opportunity to try this year. Hopefully they'll be put into full production if the test group gave them favorable feedback.

I bet you didn't feel enuf vibration either.

In all seriousness, get well. :o

I just couldn't resist after our disagreements about proper fit and shoe size a few months ago. I put a lot of imaginary made-up stuff in that one which is also one of the reasons I enjoy posting so damn much. But you and others already knew that.
