Tell me somebody saw the Mets game tonight...
I just saw the highlight, so I'm not sure of the exact scenario. I believe one out, man on third. Safety squeeze. Orlando Hernandez made a great diving catch, and the runner was caught almost at the plate. El Duque ran into the baseline, folded his arms, and waited. He casually walked towards the runner to tag him, instead of simply tossing to third. The runner walked towards homeplate, and then pointed towards first. I believe he did a "LOOK!" and then tried to run around Hernandez while he was distracted.
Furthermore, he waited until he could maybe use the umpire as a pick, kind of like in basketball. Well he was tagged out anyway. He was out of the basepath. He was pretty much out for any reason the umpire felt like. But, could he have been called out for interference. His verbal command, "Look!" could have worked, and gotten him around Hernandez and back to third (although highly unlikely). So, did his words "confuse" the fielder? What think you? |

The old Meadowlark Lemon play with the Harlem Globetrotters!
Look, it's Batman!! I don't think they're gonna call a big league player out for pointing to first base and saying, "Look."

Actually, there was a runner on first. It appeared to me that he was telling the runner to tag up so in the VERY unlikely chance that he got back to 3rd, they would have runners on 2nd and 3rd as oppossed to 1st and 3rd. |
