ORU/Clemson game commentator

Is anybody watching this on ESPN right now? When the broadcasters learn a rule, it will be the first one they ever learned. Don't they realize that some of the people out here are umpires, and know this stuff?

This was on a live-ball appeal of the runner leaving early from second base:

"It's not like the major league rule where the pitcher has to get on the rubber and then step off and appeal, they can just throw the ball over to the base for the appeal."

Where do they get this stuff?

If the commentators are former MLB players...Probably off the same paper that labels which coffee pot in the clubhouse is "leaded" and which is "unleaded". (or is it "loaded" and "unloaded"?}

Are you sure the commentators weren't Bill Murray and Rick (hic) Sutcliffe? :D

I heard it, and I also heard the commentator in the last game with his "tie goes to the runner" statement. Sheesh!

SanDiegoSteve Fri Jun 09, 2006 03:26pm

In the College of Charleston/Georgia Tech game earlier, the color commentator said, after viewing the replay of a banger at first in which the runner was called safe (he was clearly safe), "well, in baseball, a tie goes to the runner, so he was called safe." I nearly fell out of my chair.

The ORU skipper said that the umpire told him that the runner left "dramatically early." I kind of like that one!

There's a coach in one of our league that we call Coach Thesaurus. He's an English Professor at the University in town and has given us some good ones over the years such as his pitcher's "Liliputian balk", the "Galactically Obscene" size of a fielder's glove, the "chromatic brilliance" of an opposing pitcher's glove, and the best yet, the suggested "augmented arborial properties" of the bat of player who went 4-4.

Bainer.

Bainer,

Do you have any contact information? I'd like to see if he'd be willing to share a few thoughts. :D
