Actual Sportsmanship Going On

This happened in the HS Varsity game I worked yesterday;

Bottom of the 4th inning. Visitors are ahead 28 - 3 (not a typo).

Visitors have all non-starters off the bench, and in the game (good show coach).

F6 is one of the few starters still in the game, F4 is a non-starter.

No Runners, no Outs.

Batter hits a pop fly just behind 2nd base. F4 (the non-starter) calls for it. Based on the ball position, and location of the sun, F6 should have called F4 off and taken it, but he doesn't. F4 drops the ball. F6 picks up the ball, checks the BR at 1st, and trots it in to the pitcher.

As I am settling in to 'B', this is what I hear...

F1 to F6: Why didn't you call him off and take that ?

F6 to F1 (quietly): Dude, he never gets to play. We're ahead by 25, no way am I going to call him off. So he dropped it, no big deal.

I'll tell you, I love being on the field with players like that !

It would have been more sportmanlike to trot over to the pitcher and tell him privately.

DG,

Check the original post.

The way I read this, the only reason Nick heard this was he had moved to B due to R1.
