Balloon-style chest protectors

You may think this a silly question, but does anybody wear the outside chest protector anymore, or do you know anyone who does? Or when was the last time you remember seeing one anywhere?

I know a few umpires who use it. We distribute them without asking to umpires at the lowest levels, where ten year olds are learning to catch pitches from ten year olds learning to pitch.

Of course, all of these umpires are Little League (tm) umpires. On this board, that may be 'nuf said.

Last year I saw one JV umpire using a Balloon.

He was also wearing his shin guards on the outside of his jeans.

They actually offer great protection.

The funny thing is, guys will give you a hard time for using one because of the way it looks. Just like they do if you wear a Hockey Style Mask (HSM). Seems looks are more important than functionality sometimes. Sign of the times.

Maybe I should start using a Balloon and my HSM together. That aught to really shake up the old (decrepit) dogs !

That's EXACTLY why I posed the question! I now use a HSM with a balloon, and you know what, I have not had a SINGLE injury from any batted or thrown ball, and I've have had great vision on all plays.

Meanwhile, when I'm on the bases, I've had many partners working the plate take shots of their shoulders, forearms, hands, upper legs, etc. and watched them have to deal with those pains.

Do I look different? Yes.
Am I the only one I see equipped like this? Yes.
Do I care that I look different? No.
Do I miss the injuries? No.

I also find that if I don't ever have to worry about getting hit, I am able to focus more intently, which results in better calls & better umpiring from me.

Hockey Style Mask.

I remember when the umpires last went on strike I was watching a Yankee game and the home plate umpire was using a balloon.

The protection of the balloon is great- but i choose the inside protector for the mobility and having my hands free to do everything.

It would be a pain to do the lineup card and hold your raft and mask and still try and write the substitution. I can barely do it right with an inside protector! haha

Do what works best for you !
