Building a field.

I was interested in building a baseball field in my area and was wondering if anyone had any information about building a field. I am writing a grant for the local high school and was wondering what the estimated cost would be to build a field. If anyone could help i would be very greatful. My email address is [email protected]

I don't know that you'll get a lot of help from a group of umpires. However, on the eteamz baseball board you'll find quite a few league officials that may be willing to help.

Good luck!

Don't forget to add the Bunny that comes up out of the ground to hand a basket full of baseballs to the umpire like they used to have at the Oakland A's baseball field.

Oh, crap...I just dated myself !

There's a book

It's perfect for you:

Baseball and Softball Fields:
Design, Construction, Renovation, and Maintenance

Authors: Jim Puhalla, Jeff Krans, and Mike Goatley

It's a little expensive, but it's available on Amazon.

A couple of things to make sure you avoid (things I hate about local fields)

They don't drain.
They aren't enclosed (each game there is different out of play lines)
The dugout entrance to the field is too far away from home plate (as in up the line, annoying to have to toss bats out of there)
The sun at its lowest point is right in my eyes (orienation of the field).
A bullpen outside the field of play

I'm sure the books will help you out. Now if I was a kid, here's what I'd want in my field

In-ground dugouts
Lights
A Clubhouse underground entering the dugout

:)

Drain well, easy to maintain. Double batting cages, big gates to get stuff in & out.

Don't spend a lot of money on frills.

Depending on grading requirements & soil, expect to spend $125 - $150,000 if on school property. (I would expect much of the infrastructure requirements such as power, water, sewage, etc would be in place or close to the construction location).

Otherwise, $150 - $200,000 without lights. Add $35 - $50,000 for HS/College quality lighting.

These estimates would include the field w/irrigation, sod in infield, seed in outfield, fencing, etc. Above ground dugouts, two batting cages, small snack stand, restrooms & seating for 100 or so.
