Infield Fly - Who Calls it?

For NFHS 2-man mechanics, who should call the infield fly, base ump or plate ump?

2rad4u Fri Mar 31, 2006 11:34am

The BU should point straight up and the PU should make the call. The BU can call it if the PU does not (somebody, please call it).

Either way, the IFF is on.

Both are responsible for making the call. There is nothing that makes the call yours or his. Even if the BU is inside, he can say, "infield fly if fair" if the PU fails to.

Usually it's the Asst. Coach standing at 1st base. (he also lets us know when the ball is foul or there is a balk)

Other than that, in our association, they like both of us to point and make the call.

If we can do it in two part harmony, even better !

Does that make any sense to anybody?

It does to me. A sense of humor might help understand that comment, BTW. ;)

Joe

Sarcasm is often difficult to infer on Internet posts. Just do what I do: be a crochity b@stard all the time. :D:D

I was taught that if the IFF turns the BU around (in other words it is popped up past the BU's position in B or C), then the BU initiates the verbal call, followed immediately by the PU echoing the call.

If the IFF does not turn the BU around (in other words is popped up in front of him), the PU initiates the verbal call, followed immediately by the BU echoing the call.

The pointing of the right index finger to the sky accompanies the verbal call.

Easy way

who ever would normally call the out, should call the IFF.

Wow, why didn't I think of that? A much more concise way of saying what I said!:)

I forgot to mention, if on the foul line, the PU should initiate with IFF, if fair.

In Kansas where we see 30-40+ mph winds in the spring time on a regular basis we use the "Infield Fly If Fair" call a lot. I worked a game this week where according to the National Weather Service we had wind gusts of 49 mph blowing crossfield from 3rd to 1st. There were no infield flys. If it went up it went in the parking lot! :p
