I know that hs is out. BUT is he out because he got hit in fair territory OR because of interference by hitting the ball. OR is it only interference if the runner runs into the ball intentionally.

He's out because he's hit. If it's done intentionally to stop a double play, you can get two outs.

If he's in foul territory, it's just a foul. That's why R3 always takes his lead well into foul teritory.

AND being on the base will not protect him, except in the IFF sitch.

Was he directly behind the fielder making the play? - if not, he may not be out.
