I just got a hold of the original Annotated Rules (blue colored book) by Jim Evans from the Academy of Professional Umpiring along with a separate Umpires Guidebook (white colored book). I heard these are no longer available and were supposed to be available on CD but never came to fruition. Anybody know anything about these publications and are they worth reselling?

Definitely not worth reselling. You should just send them to me. I'll pay the postage.

GarthB Thu Dec 22, 2005 11:51am

I'll start the bidding at $100.

piaa_ump Thu Dec 22, 2005 12:07pm

I believe so

I seem to remember a set selling on e-bay a little while back.. Never saw where it finished but seem to remember strong bids in the $75++ and climbing range.......

I'll be driving with my family up to Grayling in upper Michigan on Friday afternoon. I'll gladly take a detour over to Detroit on the way up and take it off of your hands in person. Just think of the shipping charges you'll save!

GarthB Thu Dec 22, 2005 02:09pm

Okay, $153.

DownTownTonyBrown Thu Dec 22, 2005 04:51pm

Sal,
I just purchased two of the World's Ugliest Umpire Shirts from Garth Benham.... I'll trade you the two shirts for your books.
:D

Ooohh, and I'll pay postage for both directions.

GarthB Thu Dec 22, 2005 06:56pm

I don't get it. I don't sell any kind of umpire shirt. Is there a joke there someplace, or a serious misunderstanding, or an intentional lie? Please let me know so I may respond appropriately.

Top ten reasons it's not worth reselling:
10. Selling on e-bay is a hassel.
9. Shipping the books to the winning bidder is a pain.
8. You have to set up a Pay Pal account or wait until payent clears, which is another hassel.
7. You still might get stiffed.
6. If everything goes well you have to provide postive feedback.
5. If things go badly you have to provide negative feedback.
4. If things go badly you might receive negative feedback.
3. All of the losing bidders will be pissed at you.
2. All of your umpire friends will be pissed you didn't give the books to them.
1. You'll miss the biggest benefit of the books - the opportunity to read them!

Mike

Mike, I know you meant well and Merry Christmas...this is just for fun.

1. Umpiring is a hassle.
2. Buying new gear is expensive and requires thought.
3. When that new gear breaks or is replaced, you get pissed.
4. Players and coaches are a hassle.
5. When things go well, you have to go home and some guy gets to rate you.
6. When things go badly, some guy is going to rate you.
7. When you make a bad call, half of the people are going to be really pissed.
8. You have to wear polyester.
9. You have to wear it on really cold and extremely hot days!
10. That really expensive gear that you bought didn't protect you from the shot to the forearm or inner thigh!

Fa,la,la,la,la,la,la,la,la!

Merry Christmas!

Hot off the presses!!!!!!!!

It has been confirmed by TWO sources that the Evans Manual will be available on CD-ROM during 2006.

Tee

Is he making any updates?

e.g. in the "current" JEA he says a runner may not overrun first on a walk but the MLBUM says it is OK.

DG Wed Dec 28, 2005 05:57pm

My JEA version agrees with my version of MLBUM. Can you provide a quote from JEA?

largeone59 Wed Dec 28, 2005 09:28pm

Tee, what will this CD rom consist of?

Just text, or will it have pictures and videos?

If it just has text, they should just release it in book form.

Tim C Wed Dec 28, 2005 09:37pm

Gosh Mark,

It has almost always been a given that the "search engine" capability of the CD was far superior to book style references.

done deal..for me

Sign me up for one..........especially if it is CD....I am either on my computer for work or have it with me when traveling....so the CD would be invaluable to me..

Now lets get Papa C to put the BRD on CD as well and I'm set.....

JEA under 7.08(c) "Professional Interpretation":

<i>"A batter who is entitled to 1st base because of "four balls" being called may not overrun or overslide 1st base. This is an award which is administered while the ball is alive and in play. He is entitled to 1st base without liability to be put out, 6.08(a). His liability to be put out resumes once he touches the base."</i>

MLBUM Section 5.13:

<i>"NOTE: The batter-runner is not prohibited from overrunning first base on a base on balls (i.e., the batter-runner may overrun first base on a base on balls and is not in jeopardy of being put out provided he returns immediately to first base). (See Official Baseball Rules 7.08(c)(EXCEPTION), 7.080), and 7.10(c).)"</i>

Are there updated versions to the JEA and/or what is the latest one out there. Mine says copywrite 1993 - but I think it was purchased in 1998.

Dave Davies Sat Dec 31, 2005 08:26pm

Jim never released an update. Your 1993 Ann. is the only one out there.

He has been updating the Ann. for several years however. He showed me Rule 1 about 4 years ago. I asked if I could see Rule 2 but he wouldn't do it.

I have the '93 Ann. on CD and I asked Jim if I could reproduce the Manual on a limited basis and market it.

I got a definite NO!

I haven't heard the rumor about the new addition ciming out on CD but it wouldn't surprise me.

Dave

Forget BigUmp, I will be in Plymouth, Canton, and Allen Park tonight (actually Wednesday morning) between 01:00am and 04:00am. Don't ask, but it is for legitimate business.

You recognize that you're responding to a post that's 3.5+ years old?
