Its tthat time of year again when the mailman has started to deliver the 2006 bills required for me to umpire. This past week, I received my HS registration and the PONY registration bill. PIAA HS registration is $30 and PONY is $20 ($40 if you opt for the optional insurance coverage). Can Legion be far behind? And hopefully this year I will add a collegiate registration.......

January will bring local chapter dues for HS and Summer rec leagues of $30 and $35. And my 5 year old +POS plate shoes need replacing @ $130. I need (ok, want) some new shirts and a new jacket so that will add $120.....Add the 2006 BRD at $30. And I am hoping to do a clinic this year, but cant commit just yet.....so there will be that $$$$

So conservatively speaking I am starting out with around $400 invested in the 2006 season without calling a pitch. I'm sure many of you guys have way more registrations than I do. and this isnt unusual in any way....It usually takes me 7-8 games to break even for the season.....


but I try and keep this is mind when I hear people say the following:

I'm thinking of umpiring this season (with no idea of what it costs)

Umpiring is easy money (with no idea of what it takes)


You ought to umpire for free (volunteer) (with no idea of what it costs to start)

If they only knew.....

My black plate coat has been sold (never worn) and I will hold onto my Blue UNTIL I figure out what my final frame size will be.

Association dues: $100 to Assignment Secretary, $50 to Association (Due each September 1st). Plus PONY registration, new gear, new base shoes, and new uniforms. Plus all of the manuals which I now realize I need! :D

I would love to see the "why don't you umpire for free" crowd go out and work 150 to 200 games a year without compensation, and see how they liked it then.

Where did you find a plate coat for $185?

Man, I went from ticked off to feeling damn lucky real quickly.

We have never had to register with anyone but our board. I get something in the mail today saying our state athletic assn. is charging us $10 to register with them. All I can figure we get for that $ is free admission to the state tournament to heckle the good 'ol boys. Oh, wait a minute...that's worth it.

Wait 'til Dec. to order those +POS plate shoes. You may not get them until May but you'll save 20%.

$550 to belong to associations (college, HS, etc.)
$40 to the state
$40 for insurance

That's $630 to get started. Then equipment changes, which I am pretty well set on for 2006. I don't need new shinguards but I did ask Santa to bring a pair of GD shingaurds that I will give a try. I guess shinguards are a fetish because this would make the third pair I have and neither of the other two I have are in bad shape. I expect I buy $200 or more worth of clothing per year and another $200 in equipment. I bought a new pair of base shoes in August so I am set for 2006. I bought a long sleeve blue shirt this year, something I had not had before. I used it behind the plate when the temperature was between short sleeves and a jacket so I only used it 4-5 times. And I am aure I have forgotten something but based on these rememberances it costs me over $800 to get started, not counting Santa.

I guess I am pretty lucky too. I only have to pay $15 to my assn.

I want to get some new shirts, I need a new chest protector, and I need a few accessories(ball bag, indicator, etc.). I will probably spend at least $300 by the time I'm ready to start.

Does your HS or summer ball assigner take a fee per game assigned? If not, this is extremely low for my area.
