You're a little late with the post, but thanks for sharing.

Sure, considering it was originally announced at 12:07 pm E.S.T.

Actually Joe West posted it, maybe Thursday of last week?

Mark Carlson

It looks the first change for the postseason umpire crews is already here. Mark Carlson has replaced Larry Vanover on John Hirschbeck's playoff crew according to MLB Gameday. So looks like Vanover declined his postseason appointment for some reason. Just FYI.

ALCS-Crawford, Eddings, Barrett, Kulpa, Rapuano, Marsh
NLCS-McClelland, Gibson, Bell, Cuzzi, Poncino, Davis

A little surprised at so many first-timers (as far as LCS goes). Five by my count.

I take it the names above represent their position assignments (PL-1B-2B-3B-LF-RF)? Just wondering.

Never mind. MLB.com has it posted now as:

New Umpires

Why are there new umpires? I have never followed the MLB playoff assignments with a "magnifying glass," but I would have assumed that the umpires selected to work playoffs would work the entire October Post-Season, slowly eliminated based on further evaluations.

Example:

Division Series:
24 Specially Selected Umpires/68 MLB Umpires

League Series:
12 Specially Selected Umpires/24 Division Umpires

World Series:
6 Specially Selected Umpires/12 League Umpires

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I probably am).

Andy, umpires who work the division series cannot work the LCS, but they are eligible to work the World Series. One cannot work two post-season events in a row, nor two consecutive World Series. An umpire can also work the WS without working the division/LCS.

So, umpires who work the LCS cannot work the World Series?

Also, who is the Crew Chief in the David/McClelland crew?

1) Correct.

2) Jerry Crawford and Tim McClelland are the respective crew chiefs.
