HS game, score tied, top of seventh, two outs, R1. Visitor's best hitter (two-run dinger earlier) at bat, pitch up and in, batter ducks, pitch hits bat and rolls into fair territory. EVERYONE reacts to the ball as if it is fair with everyone scrambling. PU (Big Dog) brain farts, calls the ball FOUL. When he realizes his mistake he tells the home coach (who is now out on him) that it was his fault but the ball is dead nonetheless. Batter, with new lease on life, promptly hits a blast to the gap scoring R1 and ends up on second. Visitors win game by one run.

MORAL:

Slow down, you move too fast.
You've got to make the mornin' last.
Just, kickin' down the cobblestone.
Doo, doo, doo, doo, [big doo-doo in this game] :p
Feelin' groovy.

Not only did he "brain fart" on the call, he didn't apply the correct rule to fix it (assuming this was FED ball).

What is the Fed Ruling on this? Don't have my rulebook in front of me.

Federation says that if all participants involved ignore the call of foul that the call can be changed to fair. I personally have never understood how they are not going to react to me (6'5", 230 lbs.) screaming foul. At any rate, the ruling is well documented in the BRD and in the quarterly. This ruling is also present at the NCAA level. I'm not sure about the pro interp.

No -- that's the pro interp.

The FED interp is that the umpires can fix any call made in error that puts a team at a disadvantage. So, in this play, if the umpires think BR would have been put out at first, they can call the out.

If they think F2 would have thrown the ball away and all runners would have scored, they can do that too (but it will be the last game they work). ;)

Good call Bob. I stand corrected. BRD pg. 210 has this exact situation listed. Unfortunately I don't see how they (Fed.) expect us to ever inforce this. I don't know about the schools in your area but in my area after being police escorted out of the place we'd never get invited back.

I saw something posted on here one time that said high school baseball is a great game ruined by too many rules.

I think that this is one such case.

Sounds like a pretty bonehead play even by a Big Dog. Not sure based on your post that you believe he should be considered a Big Dog. Jim Simms/NYC

He's actually a nice Big Dog. He felt the worse of anyone on the field. The main reason I even posted this was that we're always discussing with new umpires to slow down, see the play and then call the play. This allows "rough edges" of a situation [pulled foot, dropped ball, etc.] to be ironed out before making the call. I posted it more as a point to consider [slow down], AND that anyone can boot a call [including BD's], AND that life goes on [use it as a learning or reminder mechanism].

Interesting thing is that if that happened to a Big Dog around here it's just a freak happening. No impact.

If it happens to a Medium Dog it turns him into a Chihuahua for quite some time to come.
