Batter hits a soft liner off the end of the bat. The ball lands in the outfield grass fair past first base. However, the backspin on the ball causes the ball to roll back toward the infield, where it crosses the foul line between home and first. Fair or foul?
|
Fair.
The ball became fair once it contacted fair ground past first base. |
And,
Which will invariably turn the thread to the difference between OBR and FED on a pop-up that lands in certain areas of the infield and then rolls foul.
-Sigh- |
I wasn't gonna go there Tee, but of course your right.

Yep! That "fair line" is a line from 1B to 3B, if I recall correctly. |
Could someone expand on this OBR and FED rule difference?
|
The rules are pretty much identical, except FED specifically states (adds) that a batted ball is fair if it contacts fair ground on or beyond an imaginary line between first and third base.

Hmmmmm,
I must be remembering wrong.
I thought there was a SPECIFIC difference in the rulings. As I remember it (and I could be very wrong this time): FED = If a ball lands in the area behind a direct line between first and third and some how rolls back to foul ground INSIDE that line, the ball is FAIR. OBR = If a ball lands in the area behind a direct line between first and third and some how rolls back to foul ground INSIDE that line, the ball is FOUL. Now I need to look into this further but that is how I REMEMBER the discussion from previous threads. AGAIN, I could be mistaken on this one. Edited to correct references. Tim C.,
There IS a specific difference, but I believe you have the rulings reversed between FED and OBR. JM |
Yeah,
I thought so when I typed it.
EDIT: I am going to edit the above post. |

Tim C has received a correction from a coach and accepted it graciously. Rats cheer. Cats shudder. This appears to be the second sign that the apocolypse is upon us. The first was the acquital of Micheal Jackson...:D |
No, no - the acquital was business as usual.
And a "kinder, gentler" Tee is no cause for alarm, I'm sure. ;) |
