Thanks to all of you who responded to my "what mask to look at" posting of earlier this week. Having watched my partner take a bat-directed high school fastball of his Honig's mask today I'm pretty well sold on the Honig's mask.
Now the only question (one I didn't get a chance to ask him as 90 degrees and a 7th inning foul off the mask found partner a little not-wanting-to-chat after the game) is there another choice before I send the check to Honig's?
Thanks

My experience with the Honigs K91 is that your partner should be willing to talk post game because the mask protected him well. I might try a helmet someday, but I am completely sold on K91. I have two of them.

I would say don't buy the Honig's mask. There is nothing wrong with it, but there are better ones.

The Wilson New View mask is very light and it has the squared off front.

The +POS Zero Gravity is very light, and does not have the squared off front, as some do not the "New View" look. Also the Zero Gravity is available in colors other than black.

My partner showed me his brand new zero gravity last night. The K91 is advertised as a lightweight, but the zero gravity was lighter, in fact it felt like a toy. The pads were not as cushiony as the doeskins on my K91. I was unimpressed.

I don't have any info on the New View, have never seen and never used. But I have a question, why do I want a squared off front?

+POS mask pads are filled with an air chamber, opposed to padding which other brands use. Sort of like Nike Air coushioning.

Is the Wilson West Vest mask a good compromise?

That is just a standard mask, just like the Honig's or +POS single bar.

It depends if you want to buy an older model mask (WV, Honigs single bar, +POS ultra lightweight), or a new one (New View, Zero Gravity.) The new models are better than the old models as you could expect.

Classic...new is better.

OK. Thanks. Looks like it's personal preference, the Zero Garivty, the Honigs, or the New View. You all helped a lot eliminating lesser models. Now if we could just find a place where we could try them all on before buying!
Thanks again!

The thing that the New View gives that the other mask gives you (as it says in the name) is a "new view" this mask really helps with the pitches at the knees (3 or 4 inches more than a standard profile mask)I have the oversized pads which are extremely comfortable

DG Sun Jun 12, 2005 08:49pm

I don't need a mask to help me call strikes at the knees.

DG, i am not saying you do, but it doesn't hurt to get a better look at the pitch.
