Sitch: Pop up slightly up 3rd baseline in fair territory. Catcher lunges for it and it tips off his glove and rolls into DBT. Do you award the BR second base?

Cool

David M.,

If the ball was on or over fair territory when it tipped the catcher's mitt the batter (and any runners) are indeed awarded two bases, TOP.

If tipped over foul territory, it's simply a foul ball regardless of where it ends up.

What about a wild pitch/passed ball on ball four that goes into DBT?

David,

The BR is awarded 1B (only). Any other runners are awarded one base (only) beyond their TOP base, whether forced or not.

WOW!

A complete question and answer, re-question and re-answer without an umpire involved.

Yep, I just checked the new name of the forum is "Ask the Coach!"

Tee,

Was the answer correct? Better phrased, are there umpires that would award that BR second (incorrectly) whereas the coach knew the rule?

And are there coaches who would ask for second base when the umpire knows the rule?

I take Door #2 please!

There are more coaches who will want second base.

Most coaches around here still ask for two bases on any thrown ball even if its from the mound.

Thanks
David
