I am always trying to read about the rules of baseball in order to better learn. I just bought the NAPBL Manual, now here a lot about the BRD.

What exactly is it?
Should I have it?
Where can I get it?

Any good case manuals to recommend?

If you umpire under more than one set of rules you definitely should have a copy of Carl Childress' "Baseball Rule Differences" (BRD)

It covers the major differences among OBR, NCAA, FED and NAIA rules. It also has a much better designed cover this year. (Be sure to check the credits)

I know some umpires who have a copy even though they work under just one set of rules. They like the format.

Garth, believe it or not: Many umpires who work just one set of rules tell me that the biggest selling point is the Alphabetical Index.

The FED rule book has 4 pages devoted to an index; the NCAA, 3; OBR, 2. The higher up you go, the more they think you can find on your own.

By way of contrast, the BRD has 42 pages.

There is one unique feature, the Citation Index. You're reading along in the OBR and come to 7.09(k), which deals with the three-foot running lane and interference by the batter-runner not in the lane. Surely that's the same rule everywhere.

Here, you don't bother with the Alpha Index. Instead, go to the Citation Index. Under PRO RULES, look for 7.09(k), and you will find: See Section 185, which you do and discover....
