I am planning to attend Gerry Davis' one day clinic in Kansas City next weekend. Can anyone tell me what to expect when I get there?

The Gerry Davis folks run a GREAT clinic. I will be at one at McHenry County College in the Chicago area February 24 & 25. Wear sweats, take your plate hat and mask. They spend almost the whole time doing base and plate drills, critiquing everyone. They have a bunch of instructors, so you won't spend much time standing around waiting your turn. They use throwdown bases (if you're inside), pitching cages & machines, and live pitching if they can get it. You won't be dying when you're done, but you'll stay busy and you'll learn a lot about what to do and what not to do, what you can try, and what works for you.

I attended a two day Gerry Davis clinic last year. I was extremely impressed with Gerry Davis, his crew and organization. I am not sure what will be covered in a one day clinic but what I believe you will definitely get your monies worth. The most important thing I remember from his clinic was that prefessional umpires are constantly looking for ways to improve their mechanics. As a result, they evaluate their performances and look for ways to improve. One example I can give you: Standard operating procedure for a grounder when in position A is to get a 90 degree position as quick as possible. Gerry's approach is to be aware "of your next responsibility" meaning that you get in position that allows you to make a call that pulls the first base man's foot or a swipe tag. As a result, he advoacates less than a 90 degree and when you read a bad throw you are in a better position to see the foot and the tag. I am sure you will learn a lot.

I went to the Pasadena, CA Gerry Davis Three Day Clinic in January of 2000. I particularly enjoyed the three stations of platework done in the high school gymnasium. The information/methods that Gerry and his staff convey is different from the conventional approaches taught by most associations, but his methods definitely work on the field. Go with an open mind and you will find great results.
