Question

Can someone pass along information on how I would go about umpiring games in the Atlantic League. This is an independent baseball league in the northeast portion of the country. Some of the teams are the: Camden Riversharks, Atlantic City Surf, Nashua Pride, Bridgeport Bluefish, Somerset Patriots, etc. to name a few. Thanks.

I'd contact the office of one of the teams and ask where they get their umpires. Get some contact info for the assigning organization.

Independent leagues are funny. Usually they will have a few local umpires that join their league umpires. Depending how much driving you want to do, contact one or more and find out who the director of umpring is for that league. You can also contact the president of the league. Ask them to come see you work - make it a good game and be prepared. Offer to work their preseason schedules or tune-up games. Short of that, go to a game and wait around for the umpires. Tell them your story and offer to buy the first couple of rounds.

For the most part, Independent Leagues either get their umpires after PBUC contracts are signed, and they pick up the left overs, or guys with A LOT of college and probally some previous pro experience. I talked to the Supervisor for Umpires a few years ago for the Atlantic League, and he told me they very rarely hire rookie umpires due to the the fact that it is a premier Indy League filled with ex Major Leaguers such as Jose Canseco and Jose Lima. I would contact the league so they can put you in touch with the Supervisor of Umpires.

When he is not in jail or under house arrest. Obviously, drug tests are voluntary in this league.
