quick question:
runner on first left handed pitcher.
on "normal delivery" pitch has high leg kick,
on slide step his right foot taps on the way to home.
ex. picks up right foot touches mound 12 inches then finishes stride at 18 inches.
this came up four times, with a 2 man team. the base umpire says i'm not sure if its a balk, home plate says yes balk but not my call??
help

Balk

The Balk has always been a judgement call. Even blatant balks are considered judgement calls. Just like balls and strikes!

If that umpire truely told you "Yes it was a balk" Then:
1. He is a moron for telling you that.
2. He is a moron for not calling it.
3. He is a moron for trying to palm it off onto his partener.
4. He is just a plain and simple moron!!

The balk can be called by either umpire. I do not know of any instance where one umpire is completly responsible for calling a balk.

One guy in the mlb did this. I think it was Rob Nen. I don't remeber a balk being called. If it's a fluid motion, I think it should just be let alone.

Don't we just love it when an umpire says "not my call."

What he really means is "I don't really know the rule regarding that play and I wasn't really watching so I'll just blame it on my partner."

It its not his call then he should have stayed at home.
And certainly don't say yeah its a balk and my partner didn't call it.

Ugh. Smitty lives again.

Thanks
David

What part of 8.05 (or the couple of other places balks are mentioned) was violated?

As far as I can tell, once he commits to home he must go home, and how many times his right foot taps the ground on the way is irrelevant.

If PU sees a balk he needs to call it, but this ain't it. Is he depending on BU to call balks?
