Who was the guy umpiring at 1st base wearing a different jacket than the rest of the crew and JEANS?

Baseball_North Mon May 31, 2004 05:06pm

What??? Are you serious?

I haven't seen any highlights, but maybe his uniform got lost on a plane trip or something....

It happened one year when a crew was flying up here to the Skydome. They had to call the game in random groundscrew-like clothing.... kind of funny to look at.

According to the box score, it was Bruce Dreckman. I have no idea why he was wearing jeans.

I was curious so I checked out some Astros and Cubs boards, and they said that the broadcasters mentioned that some luggage was lost on the flight.... and the PU was the only one with his umpiring pants.

Anybody have a picture of this?

I noticed 1b umpire was wearing blue pants and last year's black jacket (no Delta Blue stripe).

All of the base umpires were wearing blue jeans, their luggage was delayed at O'Hare. I would of thought that they would carry a spare with their carry on. Guess not. Wonder how the plate ump had his stuff.

The plate ump had pretty much his required uniform that he would need. The only thing that was missing was the numbers on the side of his shirt, other then that everything looked normal to me.

I just saw the highlights from this game on ESPN news; no mention of the BU's but I saw them. I feel sorry for those guys - they looked horrible and I am quite sure they were more than aware how horrible they looked. You would think they could have made a quick trip to walmart or something, even with help, so they didnt look so bad. There's probably a lesson in there to be learned also... not sure what is though.

Always carry an extra pair of slacks shirt and base shoes when flying? LOL. You can buy black windbreakers anytime of the year at an academy or sometplace. And if you know your the PU first game in the new city then I'd make sure my plate gear was my carry-on with an extra set of clothes.

Casual Day at the Ol' Ball Park

I was at the game.

The umpires looked like the were enjoying Memorial Day.
Larry Poncino made the call to have the entire crew wear the jeans. The Cubs offered Dark Blue warm-up pants, but they decided to splurge at the Michigan Avenue GAP, thanks for helping teh local economy guys.

The plate gear came from +POS and Davis and they always have back-ups at all MLB parks. WGN mentioned that the plate shoes were rushed in last minute. Thank goodness +POS is 30 miles away!

Not being a ML umpire, this is an interesting problem. I think I could carry-on everything I need to do bases, and could carry-on the clothing, and maybe shoes for doing plate. But the the rest of the gear for doing plate, would not be carry-on size. So, it would be a good idea of every major league site to have plate gear.
