You guys see the Yankees- Phillies game on March 5th? Powder blue shirts on the umpires! I thought I would never see blue on tv again.
|
Yeah I saw that, i thought I was seeing something...i really dont like the sage grey that much
|
haha i just saw that on espn a few minutes ago. glad to see its return.

At first glance, it looked like there were ASA softball umps working the Yankee game the other day! ;) Seriously.. that off-brown/yellow/whatever ALWAYS looked like that something had never quite got cleaned out in the laundry....now the question is: is the BLACK gone? If the powder blue IS back, they do need to put some darker piping on the numbers...very hard to see them in the light blue...
|
I never liked the grey either. I have always thought that the navy blue, powder blue, and red shirst with the heather grey slacks always looked professional without looking flashy. I just hope NFHS sicks with the navy blue. Where I umpire we also wear powder blue or red (always as a crew) for summer league games.

if you go to http://sports.yahoo.com/search?type=sports&p=umpire and look on the right hand side, there are 2 pictures that show the new jackets with the light blue on them.

The color is not powder blue. It is what the league and manufacturer call "Delta Blue." I have had the opportunity to see one in person and up close. When viewed head to head against the old powder blue one can tell the new color is a little bit darker.
However, I believe the league thought they were going to be a bit darker than they came out since, in an earlier press release, it was announced that they were going to be "somewhat lighter than a royal blue". They were probably judging from a swatch and not a completed shirt. |
The one I cant figure out is how the hell people think wearing Black in the sun is anything but HOT?????
Of course,up here in the NE it is July before we get our jackets off anyway. I just haven't figured out the hype on Black. |
We went to the Mets and Dodgers on Sat. and it was light blue for that crew as well. Wonder how long before I'll have to order some new shirts?

I was informed that the new uniforms for MLB 2004 will be heather greys only with three shirt colors, black, cream and navy.

Judging from what the umpires are actually wearing, I'd guess someone mis-informed you. Even disregarding the difference of opinion on the shade of grey of the new pants, there is no "navy" shirt to be found. |
heres another shot of the new delta blue shirts. i dont think navy is coming back, as long as black is around.

That's a lot of delta blue.

I've tried looking through past posts and don't think I'm repeating old information. I was browsing the internet today and found the Powder/Black MLB shirts for sale at Lester's Upstate Sports in NY. Here's the link to the shirt.

The ML umps are wearing a powder blue (or delta blue if you want to call it that), with black and white trim. The powder blue shirt I have has navy and white trim, which I think is what NCAA uses. I also have the traditional navy and a cream. My HS association only uses the navy, but they are generally finished by early June and generally play in late afternoon or at night. For summer leagues in broad daylight I prefer the powder blue or cream. When it is 90+ heat is relative, but powder blue or cream are better than navy.
I saw a ML game a week or two in broad daylight and the umps had on black. It was 90 degrees here, but the game was in Boston. I went online to get weather in Boston and it was 65 degrees. I can understand black shirts in 65 degree weather. Much warmer than that, and I don't understand black shirts. |
i have seen where the umps in a major league game have worn the navy blue shirts during and afternoon game of a double header where the temps were above eighty, and the powder blue for the night game. go figure
