Catcher's Interference rule

If the batter swings at a pitch and the end of the bat nicks the catcher's mitt, does he automatically go to first base? It would appear in a lot of cases that the catcher did nothing wrong:

the batter is awarded first, but the manager can elect the results of the play instead. If the (normal) swing hits the mitt then the catcher, by definition, did something wrong.

The catcher placed his glove into the batter's swing path.
