Umpire INsurance?

So someone asked me "do you have insurance" and i said i was covered in case of injury, but they said "what about liability in case you get sued?"

What? Umpires can be sued for something happening at a game? How so?

Any of you known anyone or have a story about this? I am primarily little league and jr HIgh, but perhaps this happens more in collegiate?

If you belong to NASO or ABUA you are covered (in a general sense -- read the policy / websites for details).

And, I would guess it would be more likely to be needed at the youth or rec level than in HS or College.

Anybody can be sued for anything... the suit might get dismissed as soon as it gets in front of a judge, but that's still gonna cost you time and money.

And if you belong to a State HS association, they might also have a policy that covers you. The NFHS also has a policy if you are a member there (likely through the State Assoc).

Insurance - National Association of Sports Officials

I joined NASO decades ago, primarily for the insurance coverage. It's top-notch, and part of the cost of doing business as an umpire. Well worth the investment - and hopefully you'll never have to use it!
