Arrrrggghhhh - Rant
No real constructive reason for this rant...just need to vent.
Worked a Boys/Girls Varsity doubleheader last night. Boys game first. Was a great game - very competitive, fast pace, good flow, not a lot of fouls. Home team up the entire game until last 2 minutes and Visitors made a run at them and ended up winning by 3. As we are heading back onto the court for the Girls game, the Home Coach tells us we did a nice job (and he lost). For whatever that's worth... Now....Girls game. Final score was 43-11, Home team lost. Home team was 3-13 from the line. Had 17 turnovers. Called them for 18 fouls. They had more turnovers, more fouls, and more missed free throws than they had points. And the Coaches were - of course - griping at us the entire time. As the game got worse, they whined more. Finally warned the HC in the 3rd quarter...she wanted to know what she had done that was so wrong, and I told her "Accumulated BS"...she got the point. Quit whining at us...probably the worst basketball game I have officiated in 20 years. Just kept repeating Mick's mantra in my head..."Get in. Get done. Get out." Rant finished. |

"Coach - we don't commit the fouls and violations. We just point them out to everybody when they happen."

I don't think it's possible to officiate well in a blowout. You HAVE to deviate from what you know is right, or the game will last 3 hours, and no one wants that. Which means you intentionally fail to call things, etc. Which to me isn't officiating well. (At the same time, if you officiate perfectly, you've also officiated poorly). Get in, Get Done, and Get Out is extremely appropriate in a blowout like this. We're not officiating anymore in games like this, we're managing and coping.

Last night--girls' varsity. Final Score--75-11. Coaches were quiet and professional. It didn't seem too bad.
Two weeks ago--different schools, about the same difference in points. Losing coach whining about everything. Partner has enough after trailing coach screams at him, by name, to call something. He did and we shot two addtional free throws. That game seemed like it would never end. |

Some years ago I was doing an 8th grade boys game and the home team won by 41 points. As my partner and I were leaving, the visiting coach started ranting and blaming us for the blowout. I said, "Ya' know coach. You may be right. We might have missed a lot of calls. I'll tell you what - to make up for it, we'll give your team 40 points. Oh wait - you still lose!" He just stood there with his mouth shut.

NCAAW D3. I've had one team twice this season. Combined scored in both of that team's losses: 157-45. That'll test your concentration just a little.

Hmm, Good rant.
I'll see all of you and raise you a 7th grade girls game that I did about 10 years ago. The final score was 13-12 in DOUBLE OT. The winning team scored the ONLY FG. Every other point was from Free Throws. Total foul count was over 50. Multiple players fouled out. I thought the game would never end.... |
