Attempted kick of opponent

A1 attempts to kick, as in trip, B1 but misses. How do you handle?

Two choices: unsporting technical foul or flagrant technical foul.

And it would have to be classified as a technical foul because it doesn't involve contact.

I will use NFHS Rules "terminology" but the Ruling for NCAA Men's/Women's Rules would still be the same: A Player 'kicking an Opponent with a foot' is the same as 'striking an Opponent with a fist'.

Whether or not A1 makes Contact with B1, the Act is a Flagrant Foul. If Contact is made, the Foul is a Personal Foul, and if Contact is not made, the Foul is a Technical Foul.

I thought about the swinging punch play. If a player swings a punch, but misses, I believe it is still considered "fighting". I do not put an attempted trip/kick in the same category as an attempted punch.

An attempted kick is definitely considered the same as an attempted punch under NFHS rules and warrants a flagrant technical foul.

An attempted trip may not rise to that level in your opinion and that is reasonable, which is why I gave the second option of an unsporting technical foul in an earlier post in this thread.

I think it depends on the circumstances. Is it a "get off me" action with the foot or a "I am trying to put my foot in your chest" kind of kick? To me the second is like fighting; the first one is out of some frustration. I can see both responses.
