NCAA doesn't have nearly as many uniform-police rules as FED. (although the doom-and-gloom in me says this is going to start the NCAA down the uniform-police rabbit hole).

If it's actually made of metal, there's no way I'd allow it in my game.

If it's plastic, it would really depend on how hard it is and if there are any potentially dangerous edges on it, but I'd be leaning towards not allowing it.

That's why us Umpires get paid the mediocre bucks.

I'd really hope that one of the officials spotted it during pregame warmups; with 7 (or 8) of us out there for a full hour before kickoff, SOMEBODY should've seen it.

ETA: I'm not trying to throw the officials under the bus here; it's entirely likely that they ruled it legal. All I'm doing is making conjecture on how I'd rule based on seeing a couple of blurry photographs.
