I was talking with a partner a while back, and he told me about how one league punishes coaches who get ejected.

They are suspended for a game, and must officiate one game before they can return to the sidelines.

He told me they work 3-man when this happens, so there's at least two competent officials on the game.

While I understand the thought process, we have discussed many times here before that many coaches don't really know the rules. So, while they will get a real feel for how hard it is, as has been stated - who are we punishing?

Coach may learn some valuable lessons though...which is obviously the point.

I believe it's a rec league. Don't know much other than that.

We have a school district here who goes further. ANY coach from ANY sport who gets ejected is FIRED. Not just their coaching job but their teaching job as well. It is open to a review of the ejection but they were tired of some of their coaches (non basketball) being ejected so they went this route. Amazingly, they haven't had a coach run since!

Wow -- the question is do officials feel less inclined to take control or do the coaches really learn how to behave like adults?

Our insurance coverage doesn't apply if we work with non-licensed officials.

And I think that most sports insurance packages read that way also.

The guy who told me about it was licensed with the state, but that doesn't necessarily mean every official in that league is.

This is an interesting point. Here in CO, many middle school games are assigned using non-IAABO officials. Many of our rec games are similarly scheduled. I'd never considered insurance ramifications.

The best policy you can have as a referee in any sport is the Policy that is included in the NASO membership. The scope of coverage includes ANY contest officiated no mater how you were assigned or self contracted. $94 per year for full NASO membership.

No, they usually do a good job and behave. As for basketball, the boys coach gets a T from time to time, but he is one of those that if he has a question and you answer it he is ok. May not LIKE it but calms down. So if you are confident in your call, and occasionally confident that you missed that call, you won't have a problem.

Wow! I hate to say it but I think this one goes a little too far.

Is this for any ejection? I'm assuming that after review, a coach wouldn't be fired for say, 3 players dunking during pre-game or a coach receiving a direct technical for an illegal uniform and later getting an unsporting technical foul.

Schools usually carry their own group insurance for their own games. And sports officials may be covered under that group insurance also. Iow, dependant on your local coverage you may be double-covered, covered or not covered if you work with a non-licensed official. Not a bad idea to find out imo.

They are held responsible for the actions of their teams. That includes warm up dunking and uniforms. It is harsh, but apparently this school used to be VERY bad with their coaches/players etc.
