This is a play which BretMan and I have been discussing on another board. The issue is the time from which bases are awarded.

Batter hits slow roller down the line to 3rd, runner on 3rd holds for a few seconds then bolts for home, 3rd baseman bolts for ball but boots it off his glove, (into foul territory) ball then rolls into the feet/path of the runner going home. Runner going home trips/falls and ball then shouts/rolls "out of play". I was the ump for this game. I called runner going home safe, he was over 1/2 way home when it happened. By this time the runner on first was nearly to 3rd and the hitter was halfway to 2nd. I held them up at 3rd and 2nd. Did I make the right call?

Had a game yesterday and this happened. I was BU. Coach reported to PU and he announced that CR would come in and run for pitcher. After an out was recorded, the OC discovered that the CR had not taken the pitchers position on first base. Isn't the PU lineup the official line-up? It showed the CR should be on first but wasn't. I was thinking that since CR was the one that should be there and pitcher couldn't replace CR on base, this should maybe be treated as an illegal substitution even though an illegal substitution hadn't taken place. If this was an illegal substitution, the offended team could notify the PU or an umpire without the offended team notifying him could rule on it. What do you think? Dave

Runners on 2B & 3B, no outs.

Line drive to the outfield drops for a hit. R2 is was moving on contact while R1 hesitated to to make sure ball wasn't caught. F8 is up quickly with the ball and throwing home.

R2 catches R1 just as they both cross the commitment line, but the throw beats both as the catcher receives the ball while touching the original plate prior to either runner touching the second plate.

Is your call:

1) Both are out
2) R1 ruled out, R2 scores
3) No outs since neither runner was tagged
4) Huh? What do you mean there are two home plates?

NFHS game. Nobody on base. Count was 3-1 but batter and catcher think it is 2-2. Pitch comes in for a strike. Catcher throws around the horn. Batter starts to walk off like she struck out. Offensive coach wants delay of game and ball 4 on his batter. It was late in the game and a 1-0 score, not that this should have any bearing on the ruling. What do you rule. I was an observer not an umpire on this play. Dave

Last night I was behind the dish, with a 0-2(I believe) count on the batter. The catcher setup way outside for a waste pitch. The catcher had to reach back for the pitch. It was on the corner above the knees for a called third strike. The batter was not happy; neither were some of the fans. All they see is the catcher having to reach back for the ball, but it was on the corner. Not where the catcher or pitcher wanted it.
